SAFETY: Silica is an irritant... prevent spills and carefully transfer to RBF. Hexanes, ethyl acetate, and acetone are irritants and flammable... prepare solvents/solvent mixtures and load/run the column in the fume hood.
STATIONARY PHASE = Silicon dioxide, SiO2 (silica)
Diagram of the microcolumn (above)
Label six large test tubes (fractions)
Clamp a disposable polypropylene column to a ring stand (check that there's a filter toward the bottom)
Add ~3 g of silica to the column using a powder funnel
Add Excedrin-silica mixture using a powder funnel
Add a level, ~2 mm layer of sand
Subtract 1 mg from each component (ASP, ACE, and CAF).
What do you think could go wrong in the packing and loading of the column?
