In 5th through 7th grades, all Ursuline girls take technology with Pre-K-7th Grade Technology teacher, Emily Pastorek. Students in grades 5th-7th focus on using technology creatively. Students use what they learn in technology to apply their skills in raising awareness in real-world issue. The students also learn about internet safety and how to be a good digital citizen online.
Students in Middle School learned how to use the green screen for enhancing projects for school and community outreach.
The middle school girls learned about stop motion videoing this year. Several classes used this videoing method to complete exciting projects! Be sure to take a look at the "Save Our Seas" exhibit page to see 6th grade's stop motion project!
The girls in middle school explore on several coding platforms to create with code! Below are projects that were made from scratch and the students learned how to code loops, filters, pixelate their videos using VidCode with HTML language. They have used Scratch to create animations and Tynker to create games. Take a look below to see project examples!
6th grade student, Maggie spoke at a Parent Coffee in the beginning of the year to share with the parents to show the "dance party" that she coded using CODE.org.
Pre-K through 7th grade students participated in an Hour of Code on Friday, December 13th. Computer Science Education Week was December 9-15 and “Hour of Code” is a global event that is celebrated during the week that gets the students to code for an hour. Millions of students were registered for the event and Ursuline was in this number! The purpose of this event was to build community and celebrate the excitement of coding. The girls listened to why coding is important as a female, what future job aspects they can pursue in coding, and they even completed coding activities on the iPad with buddies. The event was a success and was loved by all! #hourofcode #girlswhocode
Middle school students completed a Sphero robot coding "Dance Party" challenge. The girls worked in groups to create a 30-second "dance routine" for their robots to move and go with the beat/rhythm of their choosing. They used music from Apple Clips and even incorporated light effects with into their robot's routines. Part of the challenge was for each group to have their robot stay within a small 2x2 taped square on the ground while completing its "routine." The final dance routines were recorded into short montage videos to showcase their creative "dance routines."
Mrs. Pastorek recently helped a group of 6th grade Ursuline girls enter the Doodle for Google 2020 contest! This year, the Doodle for Google theme is “How do you show kindness?” Their beautiful illustrations and descriptions truly exemplify how our students are continuously living our Ursuline mission. During this difficult time, we want to share something to remind our Ursuline community that we are in this together, we are stronger, and our kindness towards one other SHINES at Ursuline more than ever! There will be regional winners, nationals winners, and one overall winner who will be awarded a $30,000 scholarship for college tuition, $50,000 towards new tech equipment for their school, and their Google drawing displayed on the Google website internationally for a day! Contest winners will be announced in June. Good luck to these Ursuline girls!
