In Pre-K and Kindergarten, Ursuline girls take technology class with Emily Pastorek. This includes learning about basic iPad navigation, introductory block coding skills, digital citizenship, and learning how to use technology for creativity. Each girl learns how to write a program on the coding app, Scratch Jr.
The Pre-K and Kindergarten students learn about the different buttons on the iPad which include: the home button, volume controls, and the lock screen button. The students are taught that iPads have apps and some are used as helpful tools, some are games, etc. During technology class, the girls get to explore the different apps that are loaded on their Ursuline iPads.
One app the Pre-K students learned all about was the camera. They explored this app by learning how to take pictures, selfies, and they even learned how to combine a series of photos to create a stop motion video.
Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten learn the basics of block coding on their iPads. Each student has their own iPad to work on. However, some class periods the students work in pairs to problem solve, build collaboration skills, and practice communication. The students in Pre-K and Kindergarten use CODE.org, Scratch Jr., Kodable, and CodeSpark apps to learn the basics of coding such as sequencing, events, and loops.
Kindergarten student, Mabyn, spoke at a Parent Coffee in the beginning of the year to share with the parents what she had been learning on CODE.org.

Pre-K through 7th grade students participated in an Hour of Code on Friday, December 13th. Computer Science Education Week was December 9-15 and “Hour of Code” is a global event that is celebrated during the week that gets the students to code for an hour. Millions of students were registered for the event and Ursuline was in this number! The purpose of this event was to build community and celebrate the excitement of coding. The girls listened to why coding is important as a female, what future job aspects they can pursue in coding, and they even completed coding activities on the iPad with buddies. The event was a success and was loved by all! #hourofcode #girlswhocode
Each Pre-K and Kindergarten student has their own Seesaw Digital Portfolio where their individual and class projects are posted and shared with their parents through an app. The students also get to see their classmates' work as well! This portfolio follows the student from grade to grade so that they can look back and remember what they had learned from previous years!
