Welcome to Lower School Art!

In 1st through 4th grades, all Ursuline girls take art with Elementary Art Teacher, Meghann Rooney. Below you will find many different art pieces that were completed throughout the 2019-2020 school year. Each month, students focus on a specific artist and the artist's technique and style. Each grade level completes a project to demonstrate their learning of the artist study. You will also find projects that were completed in art for Lower School under the Cross-Curricular Projects page.

International Dot Day

International Dot Day, celebrated on September 15th, is a day in which students are encouraged to harness their own creativity and embrace their confidence as they make their mark on the world. We began our lesson by reading the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.

1st grade explored color mixing with the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) to create the secondary colors (green, purple, and orange). Students used tempera paint and crayons for the background.

2nd grade learned how to create multiple sizes of a circle within their artwork as well as overlapping of shapes. Students used markers for the circles and crayons for the background.

3rd grade created emphasis with their construction paper concentric circles. Circles were glued to their illustrated background. Students used construction paper and metallic markers.

4th grade learned how to weave creating their own paper plate loom! They first created a concentric circle background with a paper plate. Students then created the web and circular patterns with the yarn. Students used markers, various colors of yarn and decorative beads.

Recycled Art

1st grade artists used recycled materials to make their "recycled me" person. With the help of Mrs. Rooney, students assembled a person made out of toilet paper rolls, straws, plastic bags, and yarn. The students learned all about lines and shapes while creating their patterned background.

2nd grade artists turned trash into treasure! These Ursuline girls worked hard at designing an incredible art installation - using recycled materials in an unconventional way. This installation was going to be used for a cross-collaborative project with 4th grade art class who made droids and were planning on shooting stop motion videos and using sound effects that were to be made in music class.

3rd grade artists were in the process of creating their recycled materials fish. They hand drew each individual scale on paper and glued them to their fish. The head, eyes, fins, and tails where to be constructed with plastic materials.

4th grade artists created droids out of recycled materials as part of a specials cross curricular project, "A Far Away Galaxy." Students created a blue print design of their droids in technology class before exploring all of the recycled materials brought in by students to construct their droids. Once built, students were going to create a stop motion animation with their droid in technology as well as create sound effects for their videos in music class.

Students created artwork inspired by master artist Paul Klee. Students explored many colors and shapes throughout their artwork.

Georgia O'Keeffe

Students created artwork inspired by master artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Students explored emphasis on a subject illustrated as well as the importance of color and symbolism within artwork.

1st grade orange and red poppies. Students used chalk pastels for this project.

2nd grade cow skull and line patterned background. Students used markers, pencil, and colored pencils.

3rd grade enlarged flowers. Students created these flowers with watercolors and markers. Students wrote poetry inspired by their artwork as well.

4th grade flowers. Students learned about value and created these flowers using markers and colored pencils.
