On-call duties are an essential component of this rotation, offering students valuable opportunities to learn about diagnosing and managing patients during times of limited resources, such as evenings and weekends.
As a result, each student is required to complete a minimum of four weekday on-call shifts and two weekend on-call shifts, totaling 24 hours. Students may take on a maximum of five weekday on-call shifts and three weekend on-call shifts.
The on-call schedule is determined by each site lead in consultation with the students on the first day of their rotation. At the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the schedule is created by the Nurse Education Navigator, while at other sites, it is established by the respective site lead. Please note that due to the ever-changing schedules of residents and staff, call schedules are subject to change.
According to the Clerkship Duty Hours Policy, students who work on a recognized holiday are entitled to a day off in lieu, to be taken during the same rotation.
