13. OUT-OF-FACULTY COURSES
Note that a student may be permitted to take EITHER an approved non-Law course from the University of Alberta OR an approved non-University of Alberta Law course, but not both.
Out-of-Faculty non-Law Course
Students in the upper years of the JD program wishing to take an optional course in other Faculties of the University of Alberta for credit toward the JD degree must have prior approval of the Vice Dean. Only one non-Law course (maximum 3 credits) can be taken for the entirety of the JD program.
Approval is sought by application, with the burden resting on the student to make a strong case that the desired out-of-Faculty non-Law course will make a significant contribution to the student's legal studies taking into account their specific career goals, and that it does not duplicate or significantly overlap available JD courses or any course for which the student has previously received credit.
With law students having completed several years of university education before admission to law school, the Vice Dean will not approve requests to take a 100- or 200- level undergraduate course as an out-of-Faculty course for credit toward the JD degree. Students in combined programs such as the MBA/JD program are not permitted to apply out-of-Faculty course credits toward their JD degree.
Applications to take a non-Law out-of-Faculty course must be made using the "Out of Faculty Course Request Form" found on the "Academic Resources" page of the Faculty of Law's website. The Course Outline and other relevant supporting documentation must be attached to the form.
Students who take a University of Alberta non-Law course for credit toward their JD are not eligible to take a non-University of Alberta Law course (discussed below). Students cannot take a non-University of Alberta, non-Law course for credit toward the JD degree (for example, students cannot take courses from Athabasca University or MacEwan University for credit toward the JD degree).
Non-University of Alberta Law Course(s)
Students in the upper years of the JD program wishing to take a law course, or law courses, offered by a Canadian institution other than the University of Alberta for credit toward the JD degree must have prior approval of the Vice Dean. The prior approval must be secured before registering in the course(s). The maximum course credit that may be recognized in this way is 6 credits.
As with an out-of-Faculty course, approval is sought by application, with the burden resting on the student to make a strong case that the desired non-University of Alberta Law course(s) will make a significant contribution to the student's legal studies taking into account their specific career goals, and that the courses, or courses, do not duplicate or significantly overlap available JD courses or any course for which the student has previously received credit.
Applications to take a non-University of Alberta law course, or law courses, must be made using the "Out of Faculty Course Request Form" found on the "Academic Resources" page of the Faculty of Law's website. Supporting documentation must be attached to the form.
