12. EXCHANGES & ATTENDANCE AT OTHER LAW SCHOOLS
Exchange Terms
Taking law courses at another law school requires careful planning and the full consideration of the implications for being away at times that might coincide with articling recruitment periods and other deadlines. Also note that while the grades earned for courses taken at another institution do not transfer to the University of Alberta, you do receive a transcript from the other institution and if later you apply for graduate studies, you will need to provide both your University of Alberta transcript and the other university's transcript.
The Faculty of Law's webpage on exchange opportunities arranged through exchange agreements between institutions can be found here. Review the Faculty of Law's information first, and then check the exchange opportunities of interest using the University of Alberta's Go Abroad website, found here. If you have further questions, ask to speak with the Student Recruiter and Funding Advisor in Student Services at the Law Centre (Room 128).
IMPORTANT: 3L WINTER TERM GRADUATION INFORMATION
Third year students who choose to do a Winter Term exchange, please be aware that this will delay your graduation to November. This occurs because we will not receive your transcripts in time to process for the June convocation deadlines. Once your transcripts have been received, we can issue a letter for the Law Society confirming completion of graduation requirements, which will allow you to begin articles.
Letters of Permission
Separate from exchange terms, students may also seek to attend another law school on a visiting basis (for one or two terms) on a letter of permission issued by the Vice-Dean. Visiting students on a letter of permission do not get the benefit of an exchange agreement, which likely leads to the paying of full tuition and non-instructional fees as charged by the other institution. Consult the Office of the Vice-Dean well in advance of any deadlines to make arrangements for letters of permission, and avoid making requests for letters of permission in late April/early May when the Faculty is focussed on marking exams and ensuring third-year students can graduate.
