Staff Schedule
These are the standards you set for yourselves and each other during our staff training:
BEAR Necessities!
Be courteous
Eye contact
Acknowledge the camper/parent
Respond to camper/parent
•“Making sure everyone has made it back to the sign out gym before signing kids out”
•Remember the first impressions are what help parents and campers feel safe and comfortable with you: “A positive interaction represents how we treat the kids throughout the day”
•Have only two coaches signing in and others playing games with the kids
•Know your role!
•“include the kid in the welcome conversation, not just the parent” / “use the kid’s name!”
•Say something to the parent about their child (+, activities done that day, etc.)
•Be organized, on time, and professional (don’t sit on tables)
•“Communication with all coaches before sign in and sign out of any communication pieces that need to happen with parents. Sometimes, you need to talk to a parent and another coach signs out the camper before you get the chance!”
•Sign yourself in and out
•“Keep track of which campers are and are not signed out, as well as making sure to know where not signed out campers are”
•Make sure the camper you are signing in/out is at the correct table!
•Phones should be used discreetly during camp hours and should be done away from camp participants whenever possible. You will often need to use them for camp communication, but should not be using them for personal use (except in cases of emergency)
•Camp staff must not take video or photos featuring camp participants
•Know your role each week (it will change), then do your role: it is not someone else’s job to tell you what your role is on Monday morning
•Balance the coaching between everyone (not only the lead coaches)
•Delegate tasks as lead coaches, everyone should contribute equally
●Report missing or broken equipment (forms on website!)
●“Place equipment in its proper location, and return extra items when not using them to respect other camps”
●“Trying to incorporate new/unusual equipment instead of using the common equipment to play the same games”
●“Following through when it’s your turn to organize the equipment cage”
●“We should also set some norms for our campers at the beginning of each week to remind them to respect the equipment that we provide for them, as well”
•Ensure everyone has been accounted for BEFORE transitioning (head count before and after!)
•Take the transition time and bathroom breaks into account in your lesson plan!
•“Review with the campers at first break that they do have multiple breaks and not to eat all the food at the beginning”
•Stay strict about campers not using vendors/machines
•Make sure the kids aren’t being too loud
•Make sure campers respect and clean up the space
•Make sure no campers are unwillingly alone
•“Only be gone for your designated time, be aware that other people need to take their breaks too”
•“Lunch time should always be supervised” / “We should make sure every kid is able to be seen during lunch break so no problems will occur” / “When on supervision, being in a visible place where campers can find you”
•“Supervision should not fall onto a single coach consistently”
•“Being attentive during the breaks”
•If taking a non-scheduled break, don’t waste time if the break is done
Have respectful, calm, kind interactions
Communicate clearly and early
“making sure to take your share of the workload and not sitting around doing nothing all day”
“be up front not passive” / “if you have an issue bring it up to the person and see if the issue can be resolved”
“prevent gossip by refraining from ranting to coworkers”
