Cardiac Electrophysiology

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is an academic Cardiac Care Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Since its inception over twenty years ago, our program has been providing care to patients from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the interior of British Columbia.

Our team is currently comprised of seven adult and two pediatric Cardiac Electrophysiologists who perform approximately 800 electrophysiology diagnostic and ablation procedures a year and implant 700 heart rhythm devices. Our centre offers expertise in adult, pediatric, and adult congenital cardiac arrhythmias including radiofrequency and cryo ablation techniques, as well as complex procedures such as pulmonary vein isolation, and ventricular tachycardia ablation. In addition, experience with pacemaker, defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization device implantation and lead extraction procedures can be expected.

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute houses two state of the art electrophysiology laboratories equipped with bi-plane fluoroscopy, three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping systems (CARTO and EnSite) and RF and CRYO ablation capabilities. The third laboratory, equipped with a single plane fluoroscopy is predominantly utilized as a heart rhythm device implantation suite, but is also equipped to perform diagnostic electrophysiological studies and non-complex ablations. ABACUS - a dedicated cardiac research laboratory houses a fourth laboratory equipped with biplane fluoroscopy and a Stereotaxis system.

We offer a two-year subspecialty Clinical Fellowship in adult Cardiac Electrophysiology with full technical training as previously described. Focus will be placed on the clinical management of cardiac arrhythmias and devices, non-invasive diagnostics (tilt table, treadmill and ambulatory monitoring), and exposure to pediatric and adult congenital cases.
