Adult Congenital Heart Disease

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Northern Alberta Adult Congenital Heart (NAACH) program, which is a joint clinical program of Pediatric Cardiology at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and Adult Cardiology at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, is the largest program for adult congenital cardiac care in western Canada. Our population of congenital heart patients >17 years of age exceeds 3000 patients. We provide timely and specialized care for complex patients, advanced cardiac imaging, and congenital interventional services, electrophysiologic services and cardiac surgery.

Our team is comprised of three adult cardiologists, two pediatric cardiologists, three cardiac surgeons, and two outpatient clinic nurses. We perform approximately 50 cardiac interventional procedures and 80 adult congenital cardiac surgical procedures yearly. We have state of the art echocardiographic equipment and perform more than 700 adult congenital echos yearly as well as provide intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography during each surgical case. A dedicated cardiac MRI scanner is located in the Elko Cardiac MRI Unit, and approximately 225 congenital cardiac MRI’s are performed yearly.

A western Canada-wide videoconference takes place monthly to link Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, and Winnipeg and serves as the major forum for decision-making about complex adult congenital cardiac cases in western Canada.

We offer a one to two-year subspecialty clinical fellowship in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD). Focus will be placed on the clinical management of congenital heart disease in the adult in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Procedural skills can be tailored to an individual’s needs, but can include congenital echocardiography, intraoperative TEE, cardiac MRI and congenital cardiac intervention. This position is aimed at providing the candidate with training in ACHD such that they can function independently as an ACHD cardiologist in their future position of employment. The position provides a combination of clinical training, academic activities and teaching.
