Advanced Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplantation

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Our Cardiac Transplant Program is based at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute (MAHI), a Quaternary Care Centre in the Capital of Alberta, Canada. Since its inception in 1986, our program has been providing care to patients from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Interior British Columbia. It is currently the largest heart transplant centre in Canada performing around 40 heart transplants and 40 Mechanical Circulatory Support Device implantations per year. Furthermore, being part of the World class Alberta Transplant Institute (ATI), we have the opportunity to interact with all other disciplines in Solid Organ Transplantation, benefiting from their experience and expertise.

Our team is currently comprised of 8 transplant surgeons, 5 transplant cardiologists, 5 coordinators and a skilled multidisciplinary group. A strong clinical team combined with exceptional interdisciplinary collaboration, greatly contributes to our above average clinical outcomes. Moreover, along with transplantation and heart failure management, our centre offers expertise in adult and pediatric mechanical circulatory support devices, transplant exercise physiology, congenital heart disease, high risk percutaneous and surgical interventions, all of this supported by a strong cardiac care infrastructure. Furthermore, due to our centre’s world class expertise in transplant immunology, a dedicated transplant infectious diseases service, surgical and medical expertise and clinical and basic science researchers, we have also been able to push beyond some of the traditional boundaries of transplantation. For instance, our pediatric team lead by Drs. West and Rebeyka, continue to successfully break through the ABO compatibility barrier in our pediatric population.

We offer a one year Subspecialty Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Heart failure, Heart Transplantation and Cardiac Assist Devices. It is clear that in transplantation, there are as many similarities as there are differences between different organs transplant disciplines. Therefore, our program aims to reinforce the teaching of important fundamental concepts, by “cross-training” the fellows by exposing them to other disciplines in transplantation while maintaining the overall focus in Cardiac Transplantation. Overall, this would include intensive and comprehensive exposure to inpatient and outpatient clinical care, procedures, didactic and informal teaching as well as basic and clinical research.
