WHAT DOES BEING ROYAL COLLEGE AFC ACCREDITED MEAN?

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) has established national standards for evaluating and accrediting Canadian Area of Focused Competence (AFC) programs. AFC diploma programs are post-residency competency-based programs that provide additional training. They build upon a broader discipline in order to enhance scope of practice.

The Royal College offers Areas of Focused Competence (AFC) diplomas, which are a specialized discipline of specialty medicine that address a legitimate societal need. However, AFC diplomas do not meet the Royal College criteria for a specialty, foundation program or subspecialty for existing residency programs recognized by the RCPSC.

AFC diplomas represent either supplemental competencies that enhance the practice of physicians in an existing discipline, or a highly specific and narrow scope of practice that does not meet the criteria of a subspecialty. In both scenarios, AFC disciplines and their respective programs build upon a broader discipline in order to further develop, rather than replace, one’s scope of practice.

WHAT IS A FELLOW?

A fellow defined is a post-MD trainee, registered with the Postgraduate Medical Education Office (PGME) and is pursuing supervised clinical and/or clinical research training. Fellowships are an opportunity to gain specialized expertise, not normally acquired during residency training.

Fellowship training does not fulfill certification eligibility requirements of existing residency programs recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
