Program Requirements
NURS 3112 - Nursing Honors Seminar (organized honors course)
The Nursing Honors Seminar (NURS 3112) must be completed in the student’s sophomore year prior to beginning upper-division nursing course work in either Dallas or Houston.
Students must earn an A or B course grade in NURS 3112 to continue as a nursing student in the Honors Scholar Program. If a student earns less than a B in the NURS 3112 course, students will have the following options:
a. Change major and continue as a member in the Honors Scholar Program in a different field of study.
b. Withdraw from Honors Scholar Program and continue in the upper division nursing program on Dallas or Houston campuses.
c. Retake NURS 3112 only with a successful appeal to the HAC. Appeals will only be granted under exceptional circumstances.
If a student elects to withdraw from the program, they will lose all privileges as an Honors Scholar, including, but not limited to, the Honors Scholar Program scholarship and graduation recognition as an Honors Scholar Graduate
Pre-Nursing students may select one of two routes regarding their Nursing Capstone project:
1) Sequence of 3 1SCH courses with a Nursing faculty mentor resulting in an original research project:
NURS 4011 - Nursing Capstone 1
NURS 4021 - Nursing Capstone 2
NURS 4031 - Nursing Capstone 3
Typically, it is expected that students will include the one-hour nursing capstone courses each of the junior-year semesters in their upper-division programs, and the third capstone class (4031) can be completed either in the summer following their junior year or the first semester of their senior year. The determination of the scheduling of these capstone classes will be made with the Nursing Honors Liaison and the student’s academic advisor.
All Nursing capstones are ideally completed by the end of the first semester of the senior year.
2) A 3SCH course taken J1 semester resulting in a scholarly project:
NURS 4903
This class allows students to conduct systematic or literature reviews on current areas of study in the field of nursing.
It is recommended that Honors Nursing students complete their service and fundraising hours prior to leaving the Denton campus, though it is not mandatory. Students transitioning to the Houston campus are not expected to continue completion of the social-cultural requirement after transfer.
