About Me

Hello! I'm glad you dropped by. My name is April McBroom, and I am currently in my 23rd year in the field of education: 16 years were spent teaching and 2021-2022 is my 7th year to serve in the counseling office. My certifications include K-12 School Counseling and Grades 1-8 self-contained classroom, physical education, special education, gifted and talented, and English as a second language. Prior to being in Tulia, I taught in Dimmitt, TX and Happy, TX. Because I recently completed my master's degree in K-12 school counseling, I am quite familiar with the stress of being a student. It is always an adventure!

As a member of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), I am held to the highest of ethical standards and expected to continue my growth as a professional. The American School Counselor Association supports school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, career and social/emotional development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society. ASCA provides professional development, publications and other resources, research and advocacy to professional school counselors around the globe.

According to the Texas Education Agency Sec. 33.005. DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING PROGRAMS: http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/ED/htm/ED.33.htm

A school counselor shall work with the school faculty and staff, students, parents, and the community to plan, implement, and evaluate a developmental guidance and counseling program. The school counselor shall design the program to include:

(1) a guidance curriculum to help students develop their full educational potential, including the student's interests and career objectives;

(2) a responsive services component to intervene on behalf of any student whose immediate personal concerns or problems put the student's continued educational, career, personal, or social development at risk;

(3) an individual planning system to guide a student as the student plans, monitors, and manages the student's own educational, career, personal, and social development; and

(4) system support to support the efforts of teachers, staff, parents, and other members of the community in promoting the educational, career, personal, and social development of students.

Personal Counseling Mission Statement

As a professional school counselor, I will seek to support the school’s academic mission while advocating for a comprehensive developmental guidance program that helps foster a nurturing school environment in which all students feel safe and supported in reaching academic and personal post-secondary college and career goals.

You and your student will always find a safe place to share ideas, dreams, goals, and difficulties with me in a confidential setting. I truly find joy in serving the students of Tulia High School while helping them investigate current goals and post-secondary interests. Thanks for sharing your children with me.

The "ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success: K-12 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Every Student" describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development.

"How are students different as a result of what school counselors do?" To help answer this question, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) created the ASCA National Model, which is a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program.
