Communities in Schools believes every child needs and deserves these “Five Basics”

· a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

· a safe place to learn and grow

· a healthy start and a healthy future

· a marketable skill to use upon graduation

· a chance to give back to peers and community

Each of these basics is essential in keeping students in school and helping them prepare for life. Licensed professional counselors from the organization work in the public schools to build relationships and mentor students as they become successful adults.

The Texas After-school Centers on Education work to achieve positive results and prepare students for college and the workforce. It is one of the largest statewide programs in the United States and is administered by the Texas Education Agency. Student participants are found to have fewer absences and discipline incidents than non-participants do. Those who participate have shown increased scores on state assessments and an increased likelihood of grade promotion. This federally funded program provides tools for assessing needs and ongoing assistance based on need. Through monitoring and technical assistance, ACE students, parents, and communities benefit from increased mentor and student involvement in afterschool learning activities.
