When to Add Novel SetsĀ
Staff and teachers typically reach out to library staff with new novel set requests
All selections should fit at least 3 TTSD Selection criteria and should be reviewed for bias before entering per IIA-AR(1)
New full class novel set requests should be shared with building Administrators and the Instructional Coach for review before acquisition, favoring T&L Supported Secondary Novels & Primers. Staff can reach out to their coach if they'd like to add more.
Novels not supplied by Teaching and Learning are typically purchased with PEF, grants, or building funds
Who To Involve
New full class novel set decisions should be made collaboratively between building (Admin, Library Coordinator, Equity Coordinator), Teaching and Learning (Instructional Coach, District Librarian, Director of Teaching and Learning), and Equity and Inclusion staff (District Civil Rights Coordinator, District Culturally Responsive Coordinator).
Who Pays for Novels
The library budget should be primarily used for library books, not novel sets, though the principal may provide library staff with a separate budget line for purchasing novel set replacement copies
Library staff should search for the best price and editions available when purchasing novel sets
Library staff can request additional funding for processing supplies if there is a large processing request
Where to Add Novel Sets in TTSD's Library Circulation Software
Novel set records should be added to the Resource side of Follett Destiny as a Textbook
Consider Available Space
All materials should fit neatly onto the textbook/ novel set storage shelves
Avoid overflow carts unless you have a plan and timeline to empty them
Remove older novel sets and other materials if you run out of shelf space
When to Remove Novel SetsĀ
Novel sets should be reviewed and removed periodically to make room for newer material
Novels unused for 10-20 years should be reviewed to see if they fit current CCRE best practices to determine if they are still a good fit or if they should be removed
Old material that still meets current TTSD Selection criteria and cultural responsiveness may be offered to staff
Material that no longer meets adopted standards and cultural best practices should be donated elsewhere or recycled
When to Add Textbooks
Textbooks are acquired through the district curriculum adoption process
Library staff must make room for adopted materials on library shelves or determine a plan for classroom storage
Textbooks should be checked out to teachers on an Unlimited basis so they can use them throughout the adoption
Student checkouts will default to the end of the school year; adjust if a shorter loan period is needed
Where to Add Textbooks in TTSD's Library Circulation Software
Textbook records should be added to the Resource side of Follett Destiny as a Textbook
Teaching and Learning's Executive Assistant maintains curriculum and textbook weeding guidance. They will share information about the curriculum adoption and disposal process to sites as it applies to them. TTSD typically receives new curricula and discards old curricula annually.
Outgoing, previously adopted textbooks should be recycled (not donated) to honor publisher adoption agreements
Outgoing novel sets may be donated
Sites should remove all past curriculum materials from Follett Destiny at the end of the adoption cycle
Sites may hold onto one set of past Teacher's Editions in the library if they would like to
Class sets of outgoing materials should be removed from the collection
