Equity

Equity

TTSD Library Services strive to provide equitable service to all students and staff

  • Library collections should reflect the diverse backgrounds and interests within each TTSD community

  • Library programming is designed to be Future Ready to prepare students for a wide variety of careers

  • Library staff welcome all people and work hard to accommodate all teachers and students

Please note:

Staff must not exclude titles due to conflicting personal beliefs. Only parents have the right to determine what is appropriate reading material for their child.

Here are some ways that library staff can promote equity within each library

Collection

  • Purchase and share books with protagonists and authors belonging to a wide variety of cultures and identities

  • Display books in other languages in an easily visible area so students and staff know they are available

    • Aim to include popular, high-interest titles within these collections as well as culturally authentic literature

  • Display inclusive, diverse books throughout the year among a variety of topics and genres

  • Arrange the library space so that students with limited mobility can access all library resources

Relationship Building

  • Be sensitive to the differing needs of TTSD students, staff and patrons

  • Honor each patron by taking the time to learn proper name pronunciation

  • Consider and acknowledge stressors and trauma that students and others may be experiencing

Professional Development

  • Participate in equity, diversity, inclusion and socio-emotional learning related professional development

  • Participate in, and contribute to, TTSD Library Services, and in building, team meetings
