Collection Development
TTSD library services staff strive to develop diverse, inclusive collections in alignment with district initiatives. The TTSD Instructional Resources/Instructional Materials (Code II/IIA-AR) policy guides TTSD collection development. Library staff members are required to follow this policy when selecting materials for their library collection(s) to ensure that they fit at least three TTSD selection criteria.
In addition to the criteria shared in IIA-AR, library staff members are asked to select library materials using the guidelines below:
When selecting new materials for TTSD library collections, all titles should:
Be visually appealing (clean, durable, and easy to read).
Be in demand (requested, popular, and/or aligned with the curriculum).
Be as inclusive and diverse as possible (honors TTSD Library Services' mission and district policies).
All new titles are reviewed at the district level before they are added to the collection.
Adding New Title Records to the Collection
Library Staff can complete the New Title MARC Request for TTSD Libraries form to request a title addition. Requests will be approved and added if the addition follows the TTSD collection development criteria litsted above. Library staff can view the MARC record response form to check progress of the request. Greyed out lines have been added to the collection.
Textbooks can be added at the site level using the Follett Destiny pathway Catalog -> Add Resource. The district librarian can enter district wide adopted records for efficiency, and is available to help with other record additions if needed.
Processing
When you recieve a new title to add to the collection, please process as follows:
Ensure that a title record exists for the title. If a title record does not exist, see above.
Stamp with address on the first page to the right of the inside cover.
Add a stamp to the top edge of the book, if you have an edge stamp.
Add a site specific barcode on the front or back cover, following the placement most commonly used within the site's collection.
If the item is a library book, print a spine label and add it to the spine of the book.
Cover hardcover books with a mylar wrap, softcover books with laminate wrap. If the book is already wrapped, cover the barcode with a clear barcode cover or book tape. Hardcover Textbooks do not need to be fully wrapped but covering the corners with a corner wrap or book tape can help prevent the edges from fraying.
It is ideal to minimize processing to be efficient with time, resources and resale value.
TTSD library staff no longer write acquisition data in each copy. This information is instead recorded within each title record.
Call Numbers:
TTSD library staff should use the Library of Congress, OCLC, and WorldCat sites to determine library call numbers
Follow each site's conventions to stay consistent
Feel free to ask the District Librarian and other library staff to discuss call number determination
New call numbers should have no more than three digits to the right of the decimal
Two digits to the right of the decimal is sufficient for Elementary library collections
Two or Three digits to the right of the decimal is sufficient for Middle and High School
Library staff are not required to change all existing call numbers
Library staff should apply this rule when adding spine labels to new copies
Saves time when shelving and is specific enough for school library collections

Library Budget
Site Based Funding
Principal may provide a library budget to be spent on any books, materials or supplies needed for the school library.
Library staff may have the opportunity to apply for a PSO funds.
Library staff may organize book fairs to generate funding for school library books.
Must follow site based purchasing protocols for each purchase.
District Funding
District funding may be available for schools to purchase additional materials for their school libraries.
District purchase lists should match the collection development goal(s) that the funds are designated for.
Requests should be shared with the district library team prior to purchase.
Must follow the TTSD requisition process.
Genre stickers and other labels
Genre/ YA stickers should be used to identify specific themes / genres
Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Horror...
Circulating Mature Books
According to the Library Bill of Rights, it is not the right or responsibility of library staff to limit access to any titles within library collections. It is recommended that concerned parents review their child's title selections at home with their child. Parents may decide to guide their child's title selections to align with their families media preferences. This is preferable over parent requests for staff to restrict student access to library materials within the school building.
In Elementary, our highest age rating within each library collection is typically for grades 5 - 8. Some vetted Non Fiction titles may be written for Adults but deemed appropriate for most Elementary students. TTSD middle schools carry Young Adult titles and mild General Adult titles. TTSD high schools offer all of these categories plus General Adult titles.
Tinted Label Protectors and Color Based Genre Organization
Some sites have chosen to use tinted label protectors to indicate reading level for beginning reader titles and genres.
If your site has chosen a color scheme or genre labels, stay consistent with what was initially used for clarity. If changes are made all records and copies must be adjusted accordingly which can require considerable time and effort.
