Soup Cabbage

  1. In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.

  2. Once boiling, add the turnips, potatoes, onions and carrots to the pot.

  3. Decrease the heat a little to almost like a simmer

  4. Also add the salt and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, untill it is tender or crisp.

  5. Chop all of the ingredients or use a blender and purée all the ingredients until smooth. You can also get a broth from a grocery store.

  6. Add the cabbage to the pot and cook for additional 5 minutes.

  7. When the cabbage is cooked, turn off the heat.

  8. Cooked cannelini beans to the soup.


What you will need:

  • 3 turnips

  • 3 large potatoes

  • 2 white onions

  • 4 large carrots

  • water

  • 2 medium sized cabbages

  • cooked cannelli beans

  • sea salt

  • olive oil


History:

Cabbage soup is a soup that has various cabbages, it is called Cabbage soup in Portugal as well as other places but It also changes names in other countries’ cuisines. Often it is a vegetable soup. It may be prepared with different ingredients. Vegetarian cabbage soup may have mushroom. Another variety is using fish. Traditional cabbage soup is prepared using a pork. You could also add chicken and other stuff like that.


Interview:

I also made this recipe with my Grandma and she had a story about when she was a teenager, she would go to the markets and get this Cabbage Soup. And it was her favorite soup because it gave her everything to needed in a meal. Vegtables such as cabbage and other vegatables that were also in the soup. If there was chicken in it, it gave her protein. My Grandma was a very small girl and didnt really gain weight. She had a very fast metabolism and that carried on to her children.
