Scientist need to determine if a law, theory, or hypothesis is valid. To do this they must do investigations (experiments).
Understand the phenomenon
Ask questions
Come up with a purpose
Identify an answer to a question (hypothesis)
Come up with materials needed to answer the question
Come up with procedures to test the answer
Come up with the variables
Control
The results to compare change
The variables that don't change
Independent
The variable that is controlled by the experimenter
Causes change to the other variable(s)
Dependent
The variable that is changed by other variable
Collect data
As many trials as possible will lead to reliable data
Organize data
Analyze data
Make a CER based on the data
Share the results
**Based on this outline of an investigation it is easy to see that doing experiments involves a lot more than just doing a lab!
