Mathematics Instructional Resources

Math Standards and Assessments

Kansas Math Flipbooks (6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2): This attempts to pull together, in one document some of the most valuable resources that help develop the intent, understanding and implementation of the Kansas Mathematics Standards.

Exploration of Concepts/Skills

Eureka Math: knowledge-building resources, written Eureka Math materials for math (Grades K–12)

Desmos Activities: a collection of unique and engaging digital math activities

PBS Learning Media : There are a variety of videos and interactive activities related to all math content areas organized by grade level.

Khan Academy - practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom.

Estimation 180: Students use estimation skills based on visual clues. There are three sections: Days, Lessons, and Clothesline Activities.

Edpuzzle: Teachers can upload videos (self-made or found on the internet) and embed questions. Students answer as they watch.

Math Discussions and Games

Would You Rather? : Choose the better of two options, and defend/ justify your choice mathematically.

Which One Doesn’t Belong? : Choose which one of four options “doesn’t belong”. Explain why.

What's Going On in this Graph? : Graphs, maps and charts from The Times -- and an invitation to students to discuss them live.

Same But Different: It is important to read the Steps to Use under the heading About. Students analyze two situations, comparing what is the same about them and what is different between them. It is optimum to have a group discussion but not imperative.

Games for Young Minds: There are suggestions on how to make classic games more mathematical. There are free games and ideas about working on math skills at home. Some games are not free.s.

Hour of Code : There are lots of different Hour of Code activities...some are more math-centered, but all require students to use problem solving skills. No coding experience required!

Tasks and Problem Solving

Youcubed : Math site created by Jo Boaler at Stanford University which contains low floor, high ceiling math tasks. Courses, videos, and much more!

Desmos Activities: a collection of unique and engaging digital math activities

Dan Meyer's Three-Act Math Tasks : This site has links to approximately 60 lessons that are each linked to one or more grade 6 through High School math standards and one or more Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Robert Kaplinsky : A wide variety of problem-solving lessons based on real life math scenarios.

Illustrative Mathematics : Provides instructional and assessment tasks, lesson plans, and other resources for teachers, assessment writers, and curriculum developers.

Open Middle: Tasks start with specific beginnings and specific endings, but with multiple ways to approach the problem allowing students to forge their own path/method to solve the problem.

NCTM's Principles to Actions Toolkit - These grade-band specific professional learning modules are focused on the Effective Teaching Practices and Guiding Principles from Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All.

Mathematics Assessment Project - The project set out to design and develop well-engineered tools for formative and summative assessment that expose students’ mathematical knowledge and reasoning, helping teachers guide them towards improvement and monitor progress.

Inside Mathematics - This site features classroom examples of innovative teaching methods and insights into student learning, tools for mathematics instruction that teachers can use immediately, and video tours of the ideas and materials.
