Reading

Lised below are resources to effectively teach reading to elementary age students.

ReadyGen- This is our core resource for shared reading. This program teaches read skills through authentic and engaging text.

CR Success- This is a structured literacy program that teaches phonics to students in grades kindergarten through second grade. Phonemic awareness and phonics are taught in a systematic approach that enables students to be successful decoders.

Newsela-This resource is available to all teachers in TPS, and students will gain access through their classes. This is an excellent source for finding texts to integrate into other content areas such as science and social studies. The platform offers all kinds of nonfiction and fiction texts. Each text is available at 5 reading levels and many are available in Spanish.

MobyMax- MobyMax is a program designed for all levels of readers from those learning letters and sounds to students who are working on higher level vocabulary and comprehension skills. This program allows for differentiation for all students.

Discovery Education- This is an excellent resource for reading materials that integrate with science, social studies, and guided reading. Readings can also be assigned to students to complete on their own.


Writing and Grammar

Listed below are resources to teach writing and grammar in Topeka Public Schools.

No RedInk- At the elementary level, No RedInk is used for grammar in grades 3-5. It pre-tests skills in grammar and usage. Teachers can assign and assess writing, grammar, usage, and convention through this digital platform. Grammar skills can be aligned to Kansas Common Core standards at each grade level.

Writing, Journaling, and Blogging for Students- Suggestions for several student-friendly websites where students can start their own blog or online journal. This gives students a chance to collaborate with peers and explore the power of the sharing through writing.

Lucy Calkins- Lucy Calkins developed a writer's workshop method to teaching writing in grades K-5. Her resources apply to all forms of writing and writing instruction.

Khan Academy- Khan Academy offers tutorials and practices in English grammar and usage. This is an excellent resource for students who need extra practice.

Technology

Listed below are technology application for English Language Arts.

Topeka Shawnee County Public Library- All TPS students have access to books and materials at TSCPL. This page gives instructions for accessing digital, audio, and paper books.

TPS School Libraries- Follow this link to log into your school library to explore and check out digital and audio books. Instructions for accessing the different resources offered by Topeka Public Schools Libraries can be found at this link

Seesaw- Seesaw is a digital platform that allows teachers to create and post interactive assignments for students to complete and submit. Teachers can also search and assign activities from the seesaw library. This platform allows for differentation of assignments while being an engaging and motivating platfrom for students.

FlipGrid- Students can make to respond to teacher questions. They can also record their thinking and brainstorming for writing. Teachers set the prompt and the video length requirement. Excellent for class/team building, sharing perspectives, etc..

Screencastify: Screencastify gives students and teachers a tool to easily record themselves, with or without video. The recordings can be uploaded to YouTube.

Pear Deck- Pear Deck is an Chrome extension that allows google slides presenations to become interactive. It is an excellent tool to increase engagement and motivation while allowing teachers to assess student learning.
