Topeka Public Schools Language Arts Philosophy Statement

Topeka Public Schools will empower students to aesthetically appreciate and critically evaluate text as it relates to the world around them. To that end, we will provide a balanced literacy approach providing interdisciplinary instruction that recognizes the diversity of our students. Instruction will be differentiated, relevant, and integrated. It will emphasize receptive (reading and listening) and expressive (writing and speaking) language skills through shared and independent experiences.

In order to enrich their lives and become lifelong literacy learners, students will interact with a wide variety of texts and formats. Through relevant and motivating instruction, our learners will gain an intrinsic value of literacy, and become critical and effective communicators.
