Sixth Formers are role models for the students in the younger years. In addition to the Gold tie and Silver tie prefect teams, we have cluster and subject scholars, Senior house captains, form prefects, form representatives, EDGE scholars and duty prefects.

"There’s no quick or easy way to summarise the role of Head Girl, but what I can say is that the role is constantly evolving and definitely keeps you on your toes. Planning assemblies, writing speeches, organising charity events, helping with open evenings, yearbook, hoodies, prom, the list goes on. It’s a role that has challenged me like no other and has allowed me to learn a lot about myself whilst building my social and organisational skills and teaching me what it means to have responsibility. Without a doubt my favourite part about being Head Girl is being able to interact with the wider Townley community and getting to work with the prefect team to discuss and work on projects that leave a lasting impact on the school. I have made friends in the team who I feel I would not have made otherwise and I am hugely grateful for all that I have learnt from them. Getting to play a big part in some of Townley’s traditional events, namely Head Girl’s Day and Children in Need Day, is something I have also really enjoyed - and having my name engraved on a plaque in the hall was pretty cool too! The decision to apply is not one to be taken lightly but I highly recommend it to anyone who would like an active role in the school community and who would like to push themselves outside of their comfort zone whilst putting their speech writing, organisation and leadership skills to the test. With each new prefect team comes many new and exciting opportunities so if you’re someone who is enthusiastic and full of ideas, this role is perfect for you!"
"As Head Boy, my role involves: planning and delivering assemblies; organising and attending school events; meeting with the Headteacher, the Head of Sixth Form, and the wider SLT; and generally supporting other members of the prefect team and helping everyone to fulfil their specific roles and tasks when needed. One of the things I enjoy about my role is that it has given me the opportunity to be more actively involved in giving back to the school community. I have also been able to get involved in events both within school and in the wider community which I have really enjoyed. I think other students should apply for this role because it gives you the opportunity to get involved in a variety of events both within and beyond the school community. It also gives you the opportunity to act as a bridge between the students and the SLT/Headteacher who are keen to hear what other students have to say at a ‘grassroots level’ so that positive change can be implemented across the school community."
"My role involves supporting the House Captains and helping to improve 21c for the student body, which can include coming up with suggestions of new topics and getting feedback from students. I have enjoyed helping out and supporting two important aspects of our Townley community, the House System and our 21c program. They both form an integral part of student life at Townley, from raising money for House Charities to engaging in discussions in 21c, and both are unique to our school community. I think people should apply for my role because it gives you an opportunity to engage more with students through the House System, by supporting the House Captains, and also allows you to learn more about 21c and help improve the program and make it better for students. Overall, you get to see Townley from a different perspective by focusing on student interaction between houses and during 21c, and you get to make an impact on their experience outside their academic lessons. It's a great way to encourage students to engage more with their house and 21c, which both help to enrich students beyond the limits of the academic curriculum."
"In my role as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Officer, I was instrumental in organising events and assemblies pertaining Black History Month in particular. I also liaised with Mrs Pandya weekly on ways to make Townley a safer, more inclusive environment - not only having important conversations about race but also how to best facilitate mental health and I could speak on other issues I felt were important. As a team we also get to organise fun events like the Leavers' Ball and Head Girl's Day. I enjoyed the leadership aspects of this role. With Black History Month starting so soon after the academic year commences, I was able to be 'thrown into the deep end', having to utilise my skills of organisation, communication and delegation to make sure everything ran smoothly. It also allowed me to form close bonds with my other Gold and Silver ties as this is a role that requires support from others to be done well. I think the oncoming students should apply for this role as it is immensely gratifying to be able to feel the change you contribute to regarding such important topics as Equality and Diversity. It really offers an insight into the needs of the whole school community which you may not have had if not for this role."
"My role mainly involves attending Gold Tie meetings, leading assemblies, and planning events. As Deputy Head Girl for Key Stage 3, I also liaise with the Key Stage 3 learning managers in order to provide support for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. I have enjoyed working alongside the other prefects on projects such as charity events and the creation of the yearbook. This role has allowed me to learn how to manage my time well while having many tasks and responsibilities and I greatly recommend that other students apply in the future."
"My role as the Gold Tie for KS4 has entailed being in communication with the learning managers for the appropriate year groups, and assisting them with anything from organising events to ensuring the wellbeing of the year is being looked after. As a Gold Tie, part of my role has also been to lead a team of two Silver Ties who each have helped out with one of the year groups in KS4. I have enjoyed the level of responsibility this role has allowed me, and being given the opportunity to work with year groups below me has given me a real appreciation for the workings of the school. I definitely think this is a valuable role to apply for; it is not always easy, but it is certainly rewarding and a worthwhile commitment to make."
"The role of Senior Officer for Key Stage 5 is one that holds a lot of responsibility and involves working with the upper school - Years 12 and 13. The role includes organising Upper Sixth events including sixth-form led charity events such as Children In Need, in which you will play a big part in organising and preparing assemblies and working with your peers to raise morale and money throughout the school community whilst actively interacting with fellow peers throughout the upper school. Additionally, as one of the Deputy Head Girls, working in a team of prefects is very rewarding as we all interact with each other's roles and work collectively as a team to think of new ideas and work on projects that make a difference within the school. It's also very gratifying to know that teachers trust you to come up with great ideas to support the school and all students in the best way possible, whether it be by organising Head Girl's Day, various big assemblies, open evenings or just being there for fellow students if they ever need a chat. If simultaneously helping those around you whilst developing your prioritisation and time management is something that appeals to you, then I would definitely recommend this role."

"I am the Senior Prefect for the lower school. My role is to act as a liaison between Year 7 to Year 11 while working with the specific year silver ties to organise assemblies and charity events as well as ensuring they are all receiving announcements for various lower school events. I have really enjoyed working with the other prefects to make assemblies for lower school. Also helping out with any events throughout the year from open evenings for year 7 to Sixth Form open days for year 11 has been great fun! I think other students should apply for this role as it is new and very unique. It is the only role that connects the whole of lower school and helps Townley connect as a school community."
"As Head of Year 12, my role mainly entails helping students in lower sixth form to settle in and feel comfortable. The transition from secondary school to sixth form can be quite nerve-wracking and many students may feel somewhat sceptical about making new friends, moving to a new school, as well as several other factors. As a prefect, it is your job to get to know other students across the school and help to create a safe space for students to express themselves. I personally do enjoy being a prefect because it allows you to take leadership with certain activities in the school and allows you to feel part of a community. This is a great role to have because at some point, we may all have been through some sort of transition - be it primary school to secondary school, changing schools or secondary school to sixth form. I am certain that with this role, you can play a big part in this new experience for students, and have a long-lasting impact on the members of your school community."
"The role of the Silver Tie Year 11 prefect involves liaising with the Year 11 learning manager to organise assemblies, collaborating with the Year 11 form prefects to solve any problems and come up with new ideas to aid the Year 11s and make a difference. Due to the Year 11s having GCSEs, my role was centred around giving GCSE help, tips on time management and how to stay resilient through all the stress. However, my main goal was to boost morale leading up to their exams. This role is great for anyone interested in working with students in the lower years."
"The role of Year 10 Senior Prefect means working closely with the Year 10 learning manager, helping to organise events and brainstorm ideas of how best to help the year group. I have thoroughly enjoyed working as part of a team and believe the role has allowed me to think creatively when finding solutions to ensure a positive attitude among students. The role is very rewarding as you play an active role in preparing Year 10 for examinations, putting in place the foundations for revision techniques whilst also ensuring mental health is a priority. It is definitely a role to apply for if you feel that you have strategies that you would like to share."
"I’m the Silver tie/Senior prefect for Mental Health and Wellbeing. My role included talking about mental health and wellbeing within school, helping alongside Peer mentors and delivering assemblies about mental health to the school. I enjoyed working with all the Silver Ties and making new friends and connections across year groups! Being a Silver Tie has been a fulfilling part of my sixth form experience. It has been a great way to make new friends, strengthen old bonds and help all those across the school. You get first-hand experience holding events and assemblies, working at the heart of the Townley Hub. It was a very enjoyable and useful experience."
"As a mentoring prefect my role mainly consists of working alongside Ms Reid to organise drop-in mentoring sessions for the Year 10s and 11s and pairing some students for a weekly 1-1 mentoring session as well as training and instructing the Year 12 mentors on their role as mentors. What I’ve particularly enjoyed about my role is being able to be a bridge between the younger and older years and encouraging them to feel more confident with coming to such sessions to receive help with anything from homework and tricky topics to just organisation and advice on school related topics. I think other students should apply for the role as mentoring prefect as it allows you to have an active role without being overwhelmed and connect and help those all over the school which I find particularly rewarding."
"There are two Diversity and Inclusion silver ties and we work together to create assemblies, campaigns and projects regarding a variety of issues such as racism, identity and inclusivity. In the last year, there has been an explosion of movements projecting the voices of minorities and it has been an incredible time to work on presenting this in our school community. My role has been so fulfilling; notably getting to work on a whole school assembly and creating a video project discussing racism. I have really enjoyed being able to communicate with the school on ideas on how to approach diversity and inclusivity and being able to work with people throughout the school. It is a step in coming together for a more inclusive and diverse Townley community where everyone is accepted and celebrated for themselves. This role is extremely honourable and you should definitely apply for it! Not only are you able to immerse yourself in amazing projects, but also contribute to raising awareness and speaking out for change! Good luck!"
Cluster and Subject Scholars
Each cluster and subject has its own Year 13 prefects who help to run clubs, support the departments at Open Evenings, etc.
"Being the Cluster Languages Scholar, you will work closely with the department, leading the clubs for younger years and spreading the importance of languages around the school. The clubs are also a chance for students who are struggling with a particular aspect of the language, to seek your help and advice. At the end of September, you will play a big part in organising the Languages Week Assembly and helping the department finalise the activities that are to take place. This role enables you to share your passion for languages and ignite a further interest in students around the school. In addition, you promote the importance of Modern Foreign Languages in the modern world and emphasis the appreciation for different cultures. It’s a great way for you to gain some responsibility and mentoring skills whilst also lending a hand to teachers and fellow students. I highly recommend this role, as you’ll be working alongside the best department and doing your part for the school."

Form Prefects
Each lower school form group has one or two Year 12 Form Prefects who support their form during form time.
Form Prefects are essential in ensuring all Townley students are engaged, involved and vested in the Townley community, ethos and spirit. As role models within the Sixth Form and to the rest of the school, they act as a source of inspiration and aspiration for the lower year groups, through frequent and uplifting engagement during form times.
"My favourite thing about being a Form Prefect is that I get to interact with younger year groups and be more involved in the Townley community."
"My favourite thing about being a Form Prefect is getting to interact and talk to students that I do not usually get to, and also hearing their experiences and helping them with any issues they may have."
Form Representatives
Each Year 12 form has a Form Representative to represent them.
The Form Representative role is pivotal in ensuring the progress, engagement and morale of their form and year group develops in a positive manner. They will work closely with the Year 12 Learning Manager to be the voice and ears of their peers, highlighting issues and challenges that students in their form/year group are facing as well as championing new initiatives, ideas and strategies.
"For me, my favourite thing about being form rep is when individuals in my form see me as a point of call for any inquiries or questions that they might have. It’s nice knowing that I can help them and it’s great knowing that I can voice this concern and be heard."
"My favourite thing about being form rep is being trusted by my peers with their concerns and being able to voice them as well as helping to find a solution and tackle any problems along the way to create a better working environment for everyone involved. It’s lovely knowing that with everyone together you can make a difference even if it’s a small one."
EDGE scholars
This year has seen the growth of the EDGE programme here at Townley. As part of this there are EDGE events for specific year groups, and alongside an organic student led website has also been developed. Students from years 11-13 went through an application process to become a Leading EDGE Scholar. As part of this role, they have considered up to date learning science principles that can be applied to aid in student learning as well as a consideration for wellbeing and mental health. Students have met and organised content that they would like to share with the school community and areas identified relate to a variety or areas, including:
Cognitive Load Theory
The Learning Scientists
Learning Science at Townley Grammar - considering planners and the review philosophy
Learning Science and the Townley Learning Journey - academic and extra curricular
Learning Science and English as an Additional Language
Learning Science and Townley@home
Mindfulness and wellbeing
Students will be continuing to develop the website, working with other key student groups across the school, including the Mental Health Ambassadors as it continues to grow. They have evidence cognition, meta cognition and a great deal of self regulation as part of the process!
