The Project
A multidisciplinary team of 13 students undertook a comprehensive data science study titled "India's Forest Cover Analysis" — examining changes in forest cover across India between 2009 and 2020. The project addressed a pressing environmental question: is India's forest cover truly growing, or is the reported increase masking deeper degradation of dense, ecologically critical forests?
This was not a classroom exercise. It was a structured, mentor-guided research project executed end-to-end under TOOOPLE's Applied Project Development (APD) framework, endorsed by NOCN (UK).
How the APD Framework Shaped This Project
The project followed the three-unit APD structure, giving students a professional-grade methodology to work within:
Unit 100 — Project Research & Initiation (3–5 weeks) The team began by identifying key stakeholders in India's forest ecosystem — local communities, the government forest department, industries, and conservation groups. They conducted a 145-response public survey to gather real opinions on deforestation awareness and community participation. Based on this, they defined a clear problem statement, scoped the research, and documented expected outcomes — all hallmarks of professional project initiation.
Unit 200 — Project Development Lifecycle (8–10 weeks) Four parallel sub-teams worked simultaneously on Data Extraction, Data Cleaning, Data Visualisation, and Data Validation — mirroring real-world industry project structures. Using Python, Pandas, Plotly, Seaborn, and web scraping tools, the team extracted and processed data across 14 dimensions including state-wise forest cover, annual tree cover loss, land use classification, rainfall patterns, protected areas, carbon emissions, and biomass data. All datasets were hosted on a shared GitHub repository, replicating professional collaborative development workflows.
Unit 300 — Project Reflection (1–2 weeks) The team validated their findings against published research studies, critically analysed their conclusions, and put forward actionable policy suggestions. They reflected on limitations, research gaps, and the broader societal implications of their findings — developing the kind of critical thinking that distinguishes industry-ready professionals from conventional graduates.
Key Findings
The project produced several significant insights: forest cover stands at 21.67% of India's geographical area, with six states accounting for 46% of the total; the year 2017 saw the highest tree and forest cover loss in the decade; wildfires were the single largest driver of tree cover loss, contributing an average of 25% annual loss; carbon emissions rose steadily from 1.1 to 1.7 tonnes per capita between 2008 and 2018; and the number of protected Community Reserves grew dramatically from 46 in 2018 to 214 in 2020, signalling growing conservation intent.
