Parent's Corner
Welcome to the parent resources page! We understand the importance of parental support and value it in TISD. Parents are important partners in supporting their children’s education, and it is essential that parents understand the intervention process and ways that we can collaborate to support their children’s success. Below are helpful tools for understanding intervention and the process in TISD, becoming a part of the Multi-Tiered System of Support, and resources that parents can use at home.
What is Response to Intervention
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered approach to help all learners, but particularly those who struggle. Student progress is closely monitored at each stage of intervention to determine the need for further research-based instruction and/or intervention in general education, in special education, or both.
RtI is a multi-step process for providing educational support and instruction to children who are struggling learners. Individual children’s progress is monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. RtI is most commonly used in addressing problems with reading and math, but it can also be used in other areas such as speech or behavior. The RtI process is flexible and designed to meet the needs of our students.
The RtI process typically has three tiers. Each tier provides differing levels of support, increasing in intensity as student needs dictate.
In Tier I, all students receive high quality curriculum and instruction in the regular education classroom. The classroom teacher supports the needs of all learners.
In Tier II, the general classroom teacher provides targeted interventions to students who need more support than they are receiving from the general curriculum. Intervention time is built into the daily instructional schedule.
In Tier III, students are provided direct, targeted instruction most often by an instructional specialist outside of the general education classroom.
Every student is different; therefore, interventions may differ according to student need. The key is for all stakeholders to work together in order to create students who can lead in creating the future.
HOW CAN PARENTS BE A PART OF THE MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORT?
Communicate with your child’s teacher.
Monitor and assist with homework assignments.
Ask for regular monitoring reports.
Share your child’s successes.
Learn more about the curriculum and interventions being used in your child’s school.
Attend parent/teacher conferences and other school meetings, such as Student Intervention Team (SIT) meetings about your child.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY CHILD AT HOME?
Make reading an everyday habit at home.
Encourage your child to talk using and increasing opportunities for oral language.
Ask your child high level questions and model problem solving by modeling your own thinking out loud.
Play games and interact with your child at increasing duration (Tip: Children can attend the number of minutes equal to or more than their age in years).
WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW RTI WORKS?
What curriculum is being taught in my child’s classroom?
What are the targeted interventions that my child’s school is using if he/she is struggling in the classroom?
What are the formal guidelines my child’s school is using for progress monitoring?
How will I be informed of the progress my child is making?
What happens if an intervention is not working?
Parents play a critical role in supporting what their children are learning in school. Research indicates that the more parents are involved in student learning, the higher the student achievement.
