Why do we code?

NEW! Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Skills and the Mathematical Processes (2020).

Read this one-page document and you will find that when your students are coding, they are also 'applying a variety of SEL skills to support their use of the mathematical processes and their learning connection with the expectations in the other five strands of the mathematic curriculum'.

Famous programmers highlighted in the video above started with the basics. Hear how they got started and why they think you may want to consider learning how to code.

Global Competencies

Ontario's Ministry of Education released a document in 2016 that focused on 21st Century Global Competencies. They also released their Framework for Global Competencies.

This framework identifies the following six global competencies:

  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

  • Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship

  • Self-Directed Learning

  • Collaboration

  • Communication

  • Citizenship

As educators, you need to consider your students' needs and consider how coding could help them develop the competencies skills listed above, and more.
