Contents
MARC stands for Machine Readable Cataloging.
MARC is a standardized structure by which libraries and research institutions can share metadata (descriptive information about other data) about their materials.
RDA (Resource Description and Access) provides standards for entering data in MARC format, and ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description) provides guidelines for displaying this data in a human-readable format.
The backbone of MARC standards is a set of three-digit field codes, which denote the types of information being provided. Within these fields are subfields, marked by delimiters, which separate the data into specific chunks based on their function in the overall description.

Indicators/subfields we frequently use at Rolfing are in bold.
Highlighted fields are mandatory for every bib record; highlighted subfields are mandatory if the field is used.
This list of fields and subfields is abbreviated -- included are only the ones we most frequently use.
(NR) denotes non-repeatable subfields; (R) denotes repeatable ones.
1xx, 6xx, 7xx, and 8xx fields use controlled vocabulary -- CARLI libraries use the Library of Congress thesaurus (collection of authorized terms). You can look up authority headings in Connexion or ClassWeb.
Any field containing the number 9 (in any location) is locally defined.
