STUDENT LIFE

THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THS: MR. KUHL

Many often credit teachers and students as being the heart of The Harbour School, but we often overlook the true stars at THS who really keep everything going. Mr Kuhl has been the school’s security guard ever since the Grove Campus opened in 2016. He greets students and teachers each day, and knows everybody’s names.

Security guards are often one of the most underappreciated jobs in the world. Within Hong Kong itself, there are approximately 300,000 official security guards with licences. There is a lot of stigma behind security guards as many hold the unfortunate belief that they are simply looking for an easy way out by doing a simple job. However, the truth is that security guards are hardworking and undergo training. The job of a security guard is usually not a person’s first choice, but it often happens to older people who used to work for disciplinary forces such as the police, or the army. A lot of security guards use the role to make ends meet as best as possible, and are not thanked enough for their services.

It is also in popular belief that security guards are just lazy gossips, and do nothing when in fact they often do most of the things they do, including checking pipes, fixing machinery such as air conditioners, and much more. Security guards also often have to work extra long hours, with little pay. They deserve more appreciation for the work they do. Nowadays, most security guards are over the age of 60. However, a major problem is that being a security guard is a dying job. Younger people are focusing more and more on getting into college and chasing down good job opportunities.

Mr Kuhl has been an integral part of THS for a long time. He is one of the most invaluable people working here, with a warm smile and a wave for every student and teacher. In these types of interviews, it is often always teachers being interviewed, never really the “behind the scenes” workers who help keep the school running; the unsung heroes. Next time you see Mr Kuhl, say thank you and give him a wave.
