Many of our classes are automatically set to allow Theater majors or non-majors to register, however, there are some courses that only allow registration with permission from the Instructor. If you are teaching one of these courses, you will need to issue a PTE (Permission To Enroll) number to the student so they can register for your class. The theater minor have specific courses that count towards their minor degree. This list of courses can be found here. Please do not issue a PTE to minors for courses that are not on this list. It is also a matter of equity - courses that are closed to minors are specifically reserved for our majors, who have undergone an intense audition process to gain access to these courses. You can find the PTE numbers in MyUCLA under the course you are teaching.

Login to http://www.my.ucla.edu/
Click on “PTE” under the specific class.
You will see a list of numbers that are the PTE numbers accessible to you to hand out to the students.
Please keep a copy of what PTE numbers are given out, so that you know which continue to be available.
There are three ways to distribute PTEs to students for enrollment:
Email each student individually: Refer to breakdowns from the Student Services Counselor for group assignments and email specific PTE numbers to each individual student. This is the most time intensive and least accurate way to distribute.
Distribute individually at the first class: Distribute PTE numbers to students at the beginning or end of class during Week One. Please refer to the class breakdowns to assure that the students are attending the proper session. This method requires the least amount of data entry, but will likely take beyond the first week to complete distribution.
Distribute via MyUCLA (preferred): Click on “assign” and key in the individual Student ID numbers for all students in each section. Once entered, students will be able to register via MyUCLA by clicking through to URSA. This requires the ID numbers for all students and quite some data entry, but ensures accuracy and promotes speedy registration.
For the Acting and Musical Theater group assignments, please contact the Theater Counselors for a complete and accurate listing. These lists change quarterly.
Once students are enrolled in the course, the faculty member will be able to access the student ID numbers on the roster on MyUCLA.
PTEs for minors
The theater minor have specific courses that count towards their minor degree. This list of courses can be found here.
Please do not issue a PTE to minors for courses that are not on this list.
In the past years we have run into issues when minors got themselves into courses not on this list by instructor consent, and then would find out later that the course would not count towards their degree, leading to frustration on the side of the students and additional labor for our student services staff. It is also a matter of equity - courses that are closed to minors are specifically reserved for our majors, who have undergone an intense audition process to gain access to these courses.
Note on Variable Unit Courses
Some courses have variable units (notably TH50, TH150 and TH172, and some others). If you teach a course with variable units, please communicate clearly in the syllabus for how many units the student should enroll, and please double check in my.ucla.edu in week 2 if the students are enrolled for the correct amount of units. We have racked issues in the past where students racked up more units for courses that they should have gotten.
As a reminder, 1 unit equals an average of 3 hours of work (including class time) a week, or 30 hours in one quarter.
The deadline to add or drop courses is generally 11 p.m. on the second Friday of the quarter. Any adding or dropping after this date is considered a Late Add or Drop. To process late or retro adds and drops, the student should pick up a hardcopy blue petition form from the Student Services Office at 103 East Melnitz Hall.
The student must retrieve the faculty signature and then return the form to Student Services.
*Late adds/drops (after published deadlines) are discouraged. It is possible that they will not be approved. You may be asked by the Vice-Chair for more information.
