The Kyoho Grape was introduced in Taiwan in the 1960s. After long periods of improvement, it has been developed into a variety suitable for Taiwan’s climate. These improvements were mainly achieved through branch variation selection and the enhancement of cultivation techniques. According to research by the Taichung District Agricultural Improvement Station, the average weight of the grapes grown in Taiwan now reaches 14.2 grams per berry, which is 23% heavier than the variety originally introduced from Japan. Additionally, the sweetness of these grapes remains between 18 and 20°Brix, with acidity controlled between 0.4 and 0.5%, providing a more balanced taste. In 2023, a new variety named "Taichung No. 6 – Rona Princess" was introduced. This grape not only has an elongated oval shape but also carries a honey-like fragrance. During its trial planting in Nantou’s Xinyi Township, its market price reached as high as 280 NTD per kilogram, setting a new record for grape prices.
The "Tainung No. 1 – Chunfeng" variety, developed by the Agricultural Research Institute, brought even greater breakthroughs. The fruit development time for this variety was shortened to 74-78 days, 16-18 days less than traditional Kyoho Grape, allowing summer grapes to be available earlier in late April. "Chunfeng" has a dark purple-black skin covered with a thick layer of bloom. When grown in greenhouses in Dacun, Changhua, its sweetness can reach up to 21°Brix, and its acidity is entirely eliminated, enhancing its sweetness. As a result, during spring auctions, "Chunfeng" grapes can reach a price of 350 NTD per kilogram, making it a popular variety in the market.
