The world's most common grape varieties can be categorized into two main types: wine grapes and fresh grapes. Among wine grapes, the most famous varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from France, which are widely planted around the globe and produce a wide range of wines. Tempranillo from Spain, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese from Italy, and Riesling from Germany are also important winemaking varieties.
Wine grape varieties in Asia have developed rapidly in recent years, with Taiwan's Cabernet Gernischt recognized as having French origins, while Japan has cultivated the distinctive Koshu grape for its fresh, elegant white wines. India and Thailand have responded to the tropical climate by planting varieties that are adapted to high temperatures, such as Syrah and Viognier.
For table grapes, the world's most popular varieties include Concord from the United States, Kyoho and Shine Muscat from Japan, and Red Globe, which is widely grown in Taiwan. These varieties are popular for their large fruit size, full flesh and high sugar content.
The most representative grape variety in Taiwan is the Kyoho Grape, which was introduced from Japan and adapted to the local climate, and has become the mainstay of viticulture in Taiwan. In addition, the Black Queen grape is a specialty of Taiwan's winemaking industry and is mainly used for the production of red wine and grape vinegar. In recent years, Taiwan has also begun to cultivate high quality Shine Muscat grapes, which are favored by consumers because of their rich fruit flavor and seedlessness.
