Dictation is a feature on the iPad that allows students to type using their voice anywhere they would type.
Dictation can support students to:
reduce fine motor demands
build independence
boost writing stamina
increase speed and productivity of writing
remain calm and focused during writing tasks
To turn on Dictation on an iPad in iPadOS 18:

If Dictation is not already enabled, go to "Settings".
Tap "General".
Tap "Keyboard".
Tap the circle to toggle on "Enable Dictation".
If a message is shown on the screen, tap "Enable Dictation".
The Dictation microphone will now be shown in the onscreen keyboard or when there is a Search text box on the screen.
To use Dictation on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Tap on a text box or go to a writing app (such as "Notes"), then tap where you want to type.
Tap the "Microphone" icon on the keyboard.
Begin speaking. The iPad will type exactly what it hears.
To stop Dictation, tap the microphone or say, "Stop Dictation." Dictation will turn off after 30 seconds if speaking has stopped.
To turn off Dictation on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Go to "Settings".
Tap "General".
Tap "Keyboard".
Tap the circle beside "Enable Dictation" to turn it off.

complete assignments or learning tasks. Answer questions or respond to learning materials quickly and easily by speaking their answers and ideas.
brainstorm ideas. Dictate ideas for essays or short stories by speaking freely and then editing the text later.
write a story. Focus on using imagination and creativity by dictating a story without worrying about spelling or handwriting.
dictate a Good Copy. After completing a rough copy of an English assignment, students can dictate their Good Copy from their paper rough copy.
practice pronunciation of new words. Dictate words or sentences to practice pronunciation and fluency when learning a new language.
