Spotlight Search is a feature on the iPad that allows students to easily search for apps and information. This tool can be used with all apps on an iPad.
Spotlight Search can support students to:
increase focus and attention
improve efficiency
use time effectively
build independence
To use Spotlight Search on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Tap each image below to learn more, and zoom in to get a closer look.
Go to the Home Screen or the Lock Screen. Use one finger to swipe down from the middle of the screen to open Spotlight Search.
Use the Search Bar and keyboard to search for an application, tool, feature, website, or image.
To start a new search, tap the "x" in the top right corner, and use the Keyboard to begin typing in a new search.
Select and tap an app or item from the suggestions that are shown below the Search Bar.

With Spotlight Search, students in the TDSB can:
research information for a Health assignment. Quickly look up information during independent work periods.
easily switch between apps. Use the Spotlight Search to quickly find another app without looking at all of the apps on the Home Page.
find notes without searching through folders. Begin typing the title of the note in the Spotlight Search Bar and select the note from the list of items shown on the screen.
make quick calculations. Without opening a separate calculator app, students can do simple calculations.
search for definitions easily. Type a word in the Spotlight Search Bar to find the definition without going to a dictionary app.
