The Markup tool allows students to annotate (e.g., write, draw) in supported apps. Using the built-in drawing tools, students can also annotate on photos, screenshots, PDFs, and more.
Markup can support students to:
highlight or underline important information
identify main ideas and supporting details in texts
make notes directly on the information they are working on
chunk information into smaller pieces
increase focus and attention
boost creativity
To use Markup on a photo or screenshot in the Photos app on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Tap each image below to learn more, and zoom in to get a closer look.
Go to the Photos App to select and tap the photo or screenshot to add a Markup to.
Tap the edit icon in the bottom toolbar.
Tap the Markup icon.
Select and tap a drawing tool and colour to add a drawing to the photo using your finger to draw or highlight items on the image.
To add an Image Description, Sticker, Text, Signature or Shape to the photo or screenshot, tap the "+" and select a menu option.
When adding text, select "+', then "Add Text". A text box will appear on the photo or screenshot. Select "Aa" to change the text size, font and colour, or double tap the text box to begin typing using the onscreen keyboard.
When finished adding text, tap anywhere outside the textbox. Once Markup is complete, select done.
To close the Markup toolbar, tap done to return to the marked up image in the Photos Library.
To use Markup in a supported app (e.g., Notes, and Files) on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Go to the supported app (e.g., Notes or Files). Select the note or document to add a Markup to, then tap the Markup icon in the top right corner.
Select and tap a drawing tool and colour to add a drawing to the note or document.
Alternatively, tap the "+" to add a Sticker, Text, Signature or Shape to the image.
To close the Markup toolbar, tap the Markup icon.
To use Markup in Safari on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Navigate to a webpage.
Tap the share icon in the top right corner.
Scroll down in the Share menu to find and tap Markup.
Select and tap a drawing tool and colour to add a drawing, highlight text, or tap the "+" to add a Sticker, Text, Signature or Shape to the webpage.
To close the Markup toolbar, tap the Markup icon.
When finished, tap "Done" in the top right corner.
Select "Save File To..."
Choose where the file will be saved and tap "Save". The document will now be saved in the Files app.

With Markup, students in the TDSB can:
highlight important words during a Geography or Science lesson. Highlight key words in a story or lesson to help them remember important information.
draw on pictures and diagrams for Science. Add drawings or notes to pictures to show what they learned. For example, they can label parts of a plant or places on a map.
solve math problems. Write and solve math problems right on the screen.
edit their work for Language assignments. Circle mistakes and make changes to their writing.
create fun artwork. Draw and colour on blank pages or photos to make creative projects.
