Split View & Slide Over is a feature on the iPad that allows students to have two windows open at the same time.
Split View & Slide Over can support students to:
increase focus and attention
build independence
boost confidence with using the iPad
enhance comprehension skills
improve study skills
To turn on or off Split View & Slide Over on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Tap each image below to learn more, and zoom in to get a closer look.
Go to "Settings".
Tap "Multitasking and Gestures".
Under Multitasking, tap "Split View & Slide Over" to turn it on.
Tap "Off" to turn Split View and & Slide Over off.
To use Split View & Slide Over on an iPad in iPadOS 18:
Go to an app, such as Safari or Notes.
Tap the three dots at the top of the screen.
Tap "Split View". The app will move to the side of the screen to show the Home Screen.
Choose a second app and tap to open it. The two apps will show side by side in Split View.
Tap the three dots at the top of one of the open apps and then tap "Split View" to see options for where the app will be on the screen.
Select "Left Split" to show the app on the left when a second app is chosen.
Select "Right Split" to show the app on the right when a second app is chosen.
Tap and drag the center divider (gray line) in the middle of the two apps to change how wide or thin the apps will appear.
To view one app on top of the other (Slide Over), tap the three dots at the top of the app that will be put on top, then tap "Slide Over".
This app will now show on top of the second app (Slide Over window).
To move the Slide Over window (the app that is shown on top), touch and drag the top of the window where the three dots are, and move the window to another area of the screen.
To go back to full screen, tap the three dots at the top of the selected app and then tap "Full Screen" or, while in Split View, drag the center divider to the left or right edge of the screen.

With Split View & Slide Over, students in the TDSB can:
read and respond to texts in Language. Students can have a story on one side and draw a picture on the other.
research and take notes. Have a web browser open on one side to research a topic for History or Geography and a notes app open on the other side to take notes.
complete work that uses two apps. Students can have an e-book or article open on one side of the screen, and a word processing app open on the other side to write an essay or answer questions.
watch educational videos in Geography and take notes. Students can watch a video lesson about environmental issues on one side and take notes on the other.
compare information. Students can compare two documents, images, or web pages side-by-side to analyze differences or similarities.
work on group projects. Students can use a collaborative document app on one side and a communication app on the other to share ideas and work together.
follow instructions while completing a task. Students can have a document or web page with instructions on one side of the screen, and the app that they are using to complete the task on the other side of the screen.
look at a digital Science or History textbook, and answer questions in a document. One side of the screen can have a textbook open, and the other can have a document open to record answers.
