February was a very busy and exciting month in the CALC Library! We launched our new Student Council and hosted three Lunch and Learn sessions supporting teachers across the school. These sessions focused on Brightspace support, literacy strategies in Math and Science classes, and preparation for the TALC Speaks Competition. It was wonderful to see staff coming together to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate.
February was also Black History Month, and for our co-op student’s final culminating project for Quad 2, we asked him to capture the voices of our school community. He went around the school recording short videos of students and staff sharing their heritage and languages in recognition of African Heritage Month. The result was a powerful celebration of the diversity in our school community. Please enjoy the video below — it has already garnered over 500 views!

In ENG4U, this assignment asks students to critically examine how the Western Literary Canon was formed and to question whose voices and values have traditionally shaped it. After exploring issues of power, exclusion, and cultural authority, students become “canon makers” themselves by creating four clear guidelines that define what makes a work meaningful or important to them. They then build a rubric based on those guidelines and use it to evaluate 3–5 selected works across different forms of media. All of this is compiled into a Google Sites website that includes their criteria, evaluations, creative highlights of their favorite works, a podcast, and a personal reflection on the process. The purpose is to help students move from analyzing who controls literature to thoughtfully defining and justifying their own standards of literary value.

TALC MAGAZINE & TALC Speaks Competition
This month we also held an important meeting for the TALC Speaks Competition. We are very happy to announce a collaboration between all Adult Learning Centres. After a successful planning meeting with the ACLs and PLs from the other adult school sites, we also hosted a Lunch and Learn with our ESL teachers here at CALC. With some delicious treats and great discussion, we were able to answer questions about the competition and review the process moving forward.
Another exciting highlight this month was the distribution of the newly rebranded TALC Magazine to all adult schools. We are also honoured to share that the magazine is currently being featured at Western University. Please click on the image below to view the digital copy of the magazine.
To celebrate the transition from CALC Magazine to TALC Magazine (Toronto Adult Learning Centres), we included an Editor’s Letter explaining the purpose, mission, and vision of the publication. You can read the letter below to learn more about the future direction of the magazine.
We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable March Break, and we look forward to sharing more exciting updates from the CALC Library soon!
