The COVID Conversation at Bethune
Over the last two years, our lives have changed drastically due to COVID-19. It has affected our mental health and shaped our personalities, both for the better and the worse. As we finally transition back into our first year of normality, we have seen the different ways COVID has truly impacted all of us. Have you ever been in that dreadful situation where you were running late for school and had as little as five minutes to go through the entirety of your morning routine? You may have even come to the conclusion that there is no time to make lunch and totally overlooked the fact you needed to eat breakfast. Well, if that’s the case, Bethune has your back! With its wonderful breakfast and cafeteria program, Bethune makes sure that hunger is not on the list of things you need to worry about.

“Missing out on prom doesn’t really bother me, but I do feel sad about missing out on a high school graduation because it would’ve marked my achievements and hard work and without it, high school doesn’t feel complete.”

Who exactly is the man behind the “Bethune Weekly Emails,” consistently sent since the end of August? The Bethune Journal team recently did a virtual questionnaire with him in order to help staff and students get to know him better.
Ms. Anderson has been a teacher at Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. for twenty-two years. Due to her recent diagnosis of stage two breast cancer, this is the first time that she is not teaching at Bethune since having her kids. Like many of the staff and students here at Bethune, I was devastated to hear that she would not be returning as a teacher to the school this year. As such, for this month’s editorial, I decided to interview Ms. Anderson about her experience as a teacher and her battle with cancer.
Bethune’s senior drama class performed a one act play, Almost True, at the National Theatre School Drama Festival, the largest youth drama festival in North America.
If you take a quick glance around any of the classes here at Dr. Norman Bethune C.I., you will realize immediately that while Toronto is hailed as a multicultural city, a place where it is difficult to identify a majority ethnic group, our school is anything but multicultural.
The Junior girls volleyball season started in December with a new coach who valued every player and made sure everyone was aware of what to do. They had a wonderful season of team building and skill development.
