The wackiest year has finally come to an end. From a global pandemic to worldwide protests for Black Lives Matter, 2020 has certainly made a name for itself. This 37-month year was packed with events that you may have already forgotten about, so let’s take a look at some of the most significant ones.

There is little doubt that former Vice-President Joe Biden will lead the United States differently than his Republican counterpart, Donald Trump, on issues ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to health care. First, though, it is important to understand Joe Biden: his politics and his personality.

Ever since the very first lockdown due to COVID, countries have been experiencing a struggling economy. Businesses are closing and unable to profit, leaving everyone desperate for the reopening of stores and restaurants. After Toronto’s long three-month lockdown that started mid March, businesses have begun to reopen. While certain precautions were still taking place to limit the amount of people in group gatherings, the cases have increased after the strict rules were lifted.

President Barack Obama did not do anything for Africa’s sake with his “Africa policy,” even if it’s purpose was to support the continent. Obama and some members of his team supported corrupted people of Africa. When it was announced that Joe Biden would be elected as America’s new president, many Africans and African politicians such as Abukar Arman and Amy Niang were wondering if he would be any different from Barack Obama or Donald Trump.

The peaceful evening at the Beirut Port in Lebanon was interrupted by a huge explosion on September 10, 2020. The explosion caused fear and panic amongst residents of Beirut as many were still grieving and recovering from a similar traumatic explosion event that occurred in the same site only a month ago (August 4, 2020) that resulted in 70 deaths and over 3,000 injured.

As the driest months of the year were approaching, a chain reaction of wildfires had begun in California, scattering all around the state.

As everyone stays safe at home during the coronavirus pandemic, teens are finding many ways to keep themselves occupied. With a little bit of patience, courage and understanding we will surely overcome this crisis and come back stronger than ever!

It is our responsibility to learn the history of the oppression that Black people have experienced, and how we can help amplify Black voices; one of which, is to understand the history of the N-word.
