OCTOBER 2023
September Program Review
The first month of school has come and gone! Below is a quick recap of September:
TCAPS Indigenous Education Parent Committee held its first 23/24 school year meeting on September 11, 2023. The meeting was the annual election of officers meeting. Roles were filled with acting positions and will be revisited for voting at the next meeting on Monday, November 13 at 6 p.m. at West Middle School and on Google Meet.
The Indigenous Education team met to receive updates on the program and school-year program initiatives based on Tribal consultation and parent feedback received last spring and early fall. Indigenous Education Instructional Aides will continue to provide academic support with a cultural framework knowledge base and host spaces of visual representation that foster community and Indingeous culture. The program leans on Kendaasowin (the art of learning), the 7 Grandfather Teachings, and the Seven Circles of Indigenous Teachings for Living Well for programming and guidance in services.
West Senior High School has a new club! The Native American Club meets every Thursday at 7:40 a.m. in B101. All WSH students are welcome to connect in community and Indigenous culture. They have met to discuss what they would like to do in their club, smudged, hosted an open house table, brought awareness to Orange Shirt Day, and planned to update the school's display by the front office. In future meetings they would like to bead and learn Anishinaabemowin.
Summer Baldwin, Indigenous Education Coordinator, and Ms. Willow, Central High School Indigenous Support, met with Traverse City Central High School staff to share information about the program and services provided.
We've updated our program's website header to include Anishinaabemowin! Words and representation are important to us.
Information and resources were shared with TCAPS employees through a newsletter about the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.
Anishinaabe Expressive Culture Series Resumes in October!

Bullying Prevention Month
How to Report Bullying at TCAPS
Traverse City Area Public Schools takes bullying very seriously and will investigate all reported incidents. Reports can be made by contacting your school office or by filling out the TCAPS Bullying Preventions & Intervention Incident Reporting Form.
All reported incidents reported will follow the bullying/cyberbullying investigative process.
Kendaasowin (the art of learning), the 7 Grandfather Teachings do not include mean-spirited behavior as part of our traditional way of life. Research has shown that when a person is not a part of something or excluded their life longevity and ability to learn are impacted. Let's all lend a hand in stopping bullying and promoting the traditional practice of love.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month
What Is Domestic Abuse?
"Domestic abuse, also called "domestic violence" or "intimate partner violence", can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure, or wound someone. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. It can occur within a range of relationships including couples who are married, living together or dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.
