Students looked into the rich tapestry of family history with Whakapapa Up Close, a captivating exploration of ancestry that delves into both the surnames of their parents and the unique stories of their journey to New Zealand. This intriguing project uncovers the origins of family names, traces their migration paths, and reveals significant milestones along the way. Discovering the profound connections their ancestors forged with the land as settlers in Aotearoa, they explore how these historical ties have shaped their family's legacy. From the origins of their family's surname to the significant regions of New Zealand that have become a part of their heritage, Whakapapa Up Close brings to life the stories that define who we are and where we come from.

Students embarked on a meaningful journey of discovery by interviewing their parents and grandparents, delving into family history. They asked questions about life at home and school in earlier times, uncovering the everyday challenges and joys their ancestors experienced. These interviews illuminated the profound impacts of historical events on their families, and how families coped with the trials of wartime. Through these personal narratives, students have gained a deeper understanding of how their great grandparents navigated these turbulent periods, revealing the resilience and resourcefulness that shaped their family’s legacy. This class not only connected students with their heritage but also highlights the enduring strength of familial bonds across generations. 

In a creative and heartfelt project, students transformed their family history research into tangible keepsakes. Using the information gathered from their interviews, they engraved their names and family trees onto timber cut into the shape of a shield. Each student also crafted a plaque featuring their Pepeha, a traditional Māori introduction that reflects their cultural identity and lineage. These personalised shields and plaques not only celebrate their heritage but also serve as lasting symbols of the stories and connections that define their family histories.
