Physical Restraint Policy
At Tauhei Combined School we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. This includes maintaining the physical and emotional well-being of our students while ensuring their educational experiences are positive and free from harm.
This policy outlines the rules and guidelines for the use of physical restraint as permitted by New Zealand law.
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to clearly communicate to parents and caregivers the school's approach to physical restraint, ensuring transparency, understanding, and adherence to legal requirements.
Legal Framework:
Physical restraint in New Zealand schools is governed by the Education (Physical Restraint) Rules 2020, which provide a framework for the use of physical restraint to manage behavior and prevent harm to students and others.
Guiding Principles:
At Tauhei Combined School physical restraint will be used only when absolutely necessary, as a last resort, and in alignment with the following guiding principles:
Safety: The primary purpose of physical restraint is to ensure the immediate safety of students and others, preventing harm or injury.
Proportionality: Restraint will be used proportionately to the level of risk presented, taking into consideration the age, size, and needs of the student.
Avoidance and Prevention: Whenever possible, proactive strategies will be used to prevent situations that may lead to the need for physical restraint. These strategies may include de-escalation techniques, positive behavior support, and clear communication.
Immediate Release: Physical restraint will be terminated as soon as the immediate risk of harm has passed. Staff will follow procedures for safe release and minimize discomfort or distress for the student.
Support and Debriefing: After a restraint incident, appropriate support and debriefing will be provided to the student, staff involved, and any witnesses, as needed.
Authorization and Training:
Only staff members who have completed certified training in safe and appropriate use of physical restraint will be authorized to use physical restraint techniques. This training will cover techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of both students and staff.
Parental Notification:
In the event that physical restraint is used on a student, parents or caregivers will be notified as soon as possible, following the incident. This notification will include information about the incident, the reason for the use of restraint, and any actions taken afterward.
Documentation and Review:
Each instance of physical restraint will be documented according to school policy. These records will be maintained confidentially and reviewed regularly to assess the effectiveness of the restraint policy and identify opportunities for improvement.
Review of Policy:
This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its relevance and effectiveness in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Conclusion:
At Tauhei Combined School the safety and well-being of our students are our utmost priorities. We believe that physical restraint should be used when necessary to prevent harm. We are committed to open communication with parents and caregivers and to continuous improvement in our approach to physical restraint, guided by legal requirements and best practices.
