Japanese manga (comics) and anime (animation) enjoy worldwide popularity. Buddhist manga and anime form a major subcategory and illustrate sutras and texts, biographies of priests, historical figures, saints, and the Buddha. Despite being a symbol of current pop culture, the roots of manga/anime lie in traditional art forms. This illustrated talk will explore the roots and characteristics of Buddhist manga/anime.
Willa Tanabe was Professor of Japanese Art History for 30 years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She was also Dean of the school of Hawaiian , Asian and Pacific Studies. Her written books and catalogs include topics on the Lotus Sutra, Japanese Embroidery, Korean art, Shingon art, and the Japanese Buddhist Temples of Hawaii.
