This class focuses on deepening your understanding of traditional brush stroke techniques and exploring various calligraphy styles beyond basic forms. We will explore the artistic expression of kanji characters, practicing complex compositions while emphasizing mindfulness and the connection between brush movement and inner energy. Suitable for those with some foundation in basic calligraphy principles.
"Taitoh Maki is a distinguished calligrapher and the owner of Taisho Calligraphy Studio in Oita, Japan. He is an honorary member of the Oita Prefecture Art Association and the Calligraphy Art Institute Exhibition. Additionally, he serves as an honorary advisor for the Oita Prefecture Calligraphy and Calligraphy Instructors Association and as a judge for the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition.
Born in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, Maki was influenced by his father to pursue calligraphy and painting. His passion was further ignited by his university teacher, leading him to major in calligraphy and study under the renowned calligrapher Kisaka Kiseki. Through this mentorship, Maki refined his skills and delved into the spiritual essence of calligraphy.
After graduating, Maki dedicated himself to teaching calligraphy to children, aiming to nurture future generations. He also worked as a public school teacher, eventually retiring as a principal in 1998. Maki believes calligraphy is foundational to human life, with the power to enhance spirituality and foster self-improvement. His deep study of the art, inspired by historical writings, fueled his exploration into its profound depths.
Maki advocates that integrating calligraphy into one's life leads to fulfillment and personal growth. Currently, he devotes most of his time to calligraphy and writes columns for newsletters and newspapers to share his insights and philosophy."
