This introductory class on Soto Zen meditation, or zazen, is for beginners and taught by an experienced Soto Zen priest. The session will cover the basics of zazen, including posture, breathing, and mindfulness. After a brief introduction to Soto Zen's history and philosophy, participants will engage in a guided meditation. There will also be time for questions and discussion to clarify any uncertainties. By the end, attendees will have a foundational understanding to continue exploring zazen on their own.
Ejo McMullen is the Abbot of Buddha Eye Zen Community Temple, where he has served for over 20 years, leading practice and teaching dharma. Ordained as a Soto Zen priest in 1995, he completed his monastic training at Daijoji Monastery in Japan and received Dharma Transmission (Denpo) from Joshin Kiera Roshi in 1998. Ejo is dedicated to the growth of Soto Zen in North America, serving as Assistant Director of the Soto Zen North American Office and as a member of the Soto Zen Buddhist Association and the American Zen Teachers Association. His teachings and writings have appeared in Lion’s Roar and Buddhadharma. Ejo holds a BA in Japanese and Social Science and has taught in public schools and Japanese immersion programs in the Pacific Northwest. He currently resides in Eugene, Oregon with his wife Azusa.
