This workshop introduces participants to the art of Shakyo, the meditative practice of copying Buddhist sutras. Through mindful tracing of the Hannya Shingyo (Heart Sutra), attendees will experience peace of mind and deep self-reflection. Participants can choose to write in either Kanji or English, making the practice accessible regardless of language or writing skills. The workshop also includes an opportunity to engage in Shabutsu, the practice of copying Buddhist art, further enriching the spiritual experience. Rev. Shoryu Fukagawa, originally from Chokeiji Temple in Noshiro City, Akita, Japan completed his training at Daihonzan Sojiji in 2014. Later that year, he became the vice resident minister under this father and began working at the very busy temple, performing memorial services, funeral services, zazen sessions, and running community events. He also became active with Akita Prefecture’s District 9’s Youth Minister Group and joined the Soto Shu Akita Prefecture Youth Minister Association, conducting annual Zen workshops for elementary school children and working with local communities to propagate Soto Shu teachings. On December 18, 2016, he moved to Hawaii to become the resident minister of the Wahiawa Ryusenji Soto Mission.
