Hawaii has over 90 Japanese Buddhist Temples that display a rich architectural history, including a style unique to Hawaii. Temple exteriors and interiors reflect the interplay of traditional, international, and American ideas of what a temple should look like. This illustrated talk shows how temples echo the immigrants own process of resistance to and assimilation into American culture.
