This course is an introduction to the various materials and techniques used in art. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design will be studied and incorporated into artworks. Projects will include drawing, painting, clay, sculpture, printmaking, design and many more. This class is a requirement for most future art classes.

Prerequisite: Art Foundations

The goal of this course is to continue to develop skills for personal expression by exploring a new variety of 2-dimensional media. Students will be challenged to stretch their imagination to create drawings, paintings, and prints that go beyond a literal or realistic representation of the subject matter. Problem-solving pertaining to 2-dimensional design issues will be stressed.

Prerequisite: Art Foundations

The focus of this course is to develop skills for personal expression by exploring sculpture and handbuilt ceramics. This class will also cover the firing process using the kiln. Students will be challenged to stretch their imagination to create 3-dimensional works that go beyond a literal or realistic representation of subject matter. Problem solving pertaining to 3-dimensional design issues will be stressed.

Prerequisite: Art Foundations 

The focus of this course is to develop skills for personal expression by exploring sculpture, handbuilt and wheel-thrown ceramics. This class will also cover the firing process using the kiln. Students will be challenged to stretch their imagination to create 3-dimensional works that go beyond a literal or realistic representation of subject matter. Problem-solving pertaining to 3-dimensional design issues will be stressed.

Prerequisite:2D Design

Students enrolled in this course need to be self-motivated, self-directed learners and able to plan, manage, and focus their time efficiently and productively. This course is designed for students who have an above average interest and ability in art and are serious about continuing to improve their art skills as well as develop a personal style. More advanced techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, and design will be introduced. Appropriate methods for matting/displaying work and stretching canvas will be presented. Seniors in this course will be expected to build a body of work to be exhibited in the annual student art show during 4th quarter.

Prerequisite: 3D Design

Students enrolled in this course need to be self-motivated, self-directed learners and able to plan, manage, and focus their time efficiently and productively. This course is designed for students who have an above average interest and ability in art and are serious about continuing to improve their art skills as well as develop a personal style. More sophisticated techniques in sculpture and ceramics will be introduced. Students will explore clay construction, decorative processes, throwing wheels, alternative firing processes, and much more. Seniors in this course will be expected to build a body of work to be exhibited in the annual student art show during 4th quarter.

Students enrolled in this course need to be self-motivated, self-directed learners and able to plan, manage, and focus their time efficiently and productively. Seniors in this course will be expected to build a body of work to be exhibited in the annual student art show during 4th quarter.

Do other cultures, philosophies, time periods and their artworks fascinate you? Sign up for APAH! Analyze how the artworks of diverse cultures helped shape the world. Discuss how media and style reflect the given civilization and time period. Learn and use the specialized vocabulary of the art world to write descriptions and analyses of art. A variety of artworks will be studied such as architecture, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture. We will utilize a variety of learning activities in class such as readings, visual presentations, VR activities, videos, discussions and field trips. Active participation in these activities are required for the class.

Travel to different times and places to learn about interesting artists, techniques, and styles. Then, make your own art based on what we’ve learned! We will be writing and talking about art in addition to creating it. Projects could include nature sculptures, “drawing” with wire, 3-dimensional masks, mandalas, zentangles, or “upcycled” mobiles. This class is open to all students and can be taken as a stepping stone to Art Foundations or as an extra art class at any time.

Students will learn how to use Adobe software programs, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and others, that are the standard in various digital art fields. Upon completion of this course the student will have basic proficiency in creating, developing, and publishing digital media such as graphics, illustrations, photography, videos, and more. Students will be introduced to the elements of art, principles of design, and visual literacy through the creation of digital artworks.

Do you want to create the handmade items you see on Etsy or Pinterest? This class is for you! We will focus on creating functional art pieces (things you can actually use) and/or using natural materials (metals, clay, glass, fibers and wood) to create fun pieces of art. Possible projects and/or materials to be used include jewelry, weaving, fabric, clay bowls or cups, mosaics, papermaking, and upcycling magazines. This class is open to all students and can be taken as a stepping stone to Art Foundations or as an extra art class at any time.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this class, you will learn to use your camera to tell amazing stories through the photos you take. We will discuss camera functions, lighting, photo editing software and more in relation to creating a dynamic, eye-catching image. Students should have their own camera (this could be a cell phone, “point and shoot” digital camera, or DSLR).

Murals have been around for 30,000 years and are still a thriving art form today! You only have to walk the streets of Sylvania to see murals created by students and professional artists alike. Learn about a variety of public art forms, like murals, graffiti, installations, and sculptures. Then collaborate with others to create both temporary and/or permanent public artworks around the school or community! Class size will be limited to 20 students.
