This course is designed for students who have an above average interest and ability in art and are serious about continuing to improve their art skills as well as develop a personal style. More advanced techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, and design will be introduced. Appropriate methods for matting/displaying work and stretching canvas will be presented. Seniors in this course will be expected to build a body of work to be exhibited in the annual student art show during 4th quarter.

More sophisticated techniques in sculpture and ceramics will be introduced. Students will explore clay construction, decorative processes, throwing wheels, alternative firing processes, and much more. Do other cultures, philosophies, time periods and their artworks fascinate you? Sign up for APAH! Analyze how the artworks of diverse cultures helped shape the world. Discuss how media and style reflect the given civilization and time period. Learn and use the specialized vocabulary of the art world to write descriptions and analyses of art. A variety of artworks will be studied such as architecture, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture. We will utilize a variety of learning activities in class such as readings, visual presentations, VR activities, videos, discussions and field trips. Active participation in these activities are required for the class.

Travel to different times and places to learn about interesting artists, techniques, and styles. Then, make your own art based on what we’ve learned! Students will learn how to use Adobe software programs, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and others, that are the standard in various digital art fields. Learn about a variety of public art forms, like murals, graffiti, installations, and sculptures. Then collaborate with others to create both temporary and/or permanent public artworks around the school or community! Class size will be limited to 20 students.
