A Cappella Choir (3764) - NV ONLY

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 11-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


A Cappella Choir is Northview's most select mixed ensemble. The choir, in addition to concerts, performs in a concert tour for an average of four days every other year. During the years when the A Cappella Choir does not tour, they perform a Cabaret dinner for the Sylvania community. A wide variety of music performed includes some of the more demanding literature. Membership is by audition and requires that students sight sing and display their range through video-recorded exercises. While not required, it is recommended that a student wishing to become a member of the A Cappella Choir participate in another Northview chorus in preparation for this auditioned group. Attendance at scheduled performances is required. Note: The selection of choral music based upon its historic and music significance and at times will have religious text.

Honors A Cappella Choir (3766) - NV ONLY

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 11-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Honors A Cappella Choir students are selected by audition only. Students selected for this elite group must be enrolled in A Cappella Choir. Honors A cappella Choir students perform more frequently throughout the school year than the other performing ensembles. In addition, a greater emphasis is placed on vocal jazz performance. Students enrolled in Honors A cappella Choir must perform a solo at the Ohio Music Education Association Solo and Ensemble Contest, and must prepare auditions for District Honors Choir. Students selected for Honors A Cappella Choir must exhibit the highest rehearsal and performance integrity. Attendance at scheduled performances is required. Note: The selection of choral literature is based upon its historical, musical and technical significance and at times will have religious text.

Tenor Bass Chorus (37755/6) - NV ONLY

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 9-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


TENOR-BASS CHORUS is a 9th-12th grade vocal group focused on developing the fundamental skills of voice production, sight-reading, tuning, blending, and balance. This ensemble is primarily a skill building group for Northview’s developing Tenor and Bass range voices, but also open to upperclassmen involvement and leadership. The Northview Treble Choir will perform at all Northview Choir events, including OMEA District and State competitions. Attendance at all scheduled events is required

Treble Choir (37765/6) - NV ONLY

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 9-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Northview Treble Choir is a 9th-12th grade vocal group focused on developing the fundamental skills of voice production, sight-reading, tuning, blending, and balance. This ensemble is primarily a skill building group for Northview’s developing soprano and alto range voices, but also open to upperclassmen involvement and leadership. The Northview Treble Choir will perform at all Northview Choir events, including OMEA District and State competitions.  Attendance at all scheduled events is required.

The Harmony Road Show (3769) - NV ONLY

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 10-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Prerequisite: A Cappella Choir 


Specializing in pop a capella, Harmony Road Show (“HRS”) is a mixed voice audition-only group of 16 singers. Students learn vocal pop performance techniques both on and off microphones. They are expected to learn about vocal sound technology and tech set-up of speakers and microphones in various performance venues. HRS performs by invitation at many community functions, at choir concerts, and with the Northview Jazz Band in the spring. The Harmony Roadshow has performed and workshopped with members of M-Pact, Up-in-the-Air, New York Voices, and vocal jazz/vocal pop professionals from around the world. Attendance at scheduled performances is required. Students are required to furnish their own formal uniforms in accordance with uniform guidelines.

AP Music Theory (3767)

Year Credit 1 Grade Level: 10-12       


This course fulfills the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Corequisite: A Cappella Choir, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, or consent of the instructor. 


AP Music Theory is for the student who has a serious interest in knowing how music is put together. It is for the highly motivated student who will learn most of the skills taught in a first level college music theory course. Students will learn about musical modes and rules of basic composition. While piano keyboard skills are not required, they are helpful. Aural skills will be learned and developed through the use of several music skills computer programs. Students will develop listening skills to enable them to hear and notate musical examples and heighten compositional skills. It is expected that students will take the AP exam.

Pop Music (3768)

Semester Credit .5 Grade Level: 9-12       


This course will count toward the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Jazz, Blues, Rock-n-Roll and all popular music from the 1910s to the present will be studied. The course involves a great deal of music listening in conjunction with defining what musical traits characterize each style of popular music. Each student will be able to classify and categorize popular music examples by artist and by the stylistic techniques used."

Concert Choir (37539) - SV ONLY

Honors Symphonic Choir (37661) - SV ONLY

This course will count toward the Fine Arts graduation requirement


Symphonic Choir is a mixed chorus for grades 9-12. The chorus performs a wide variety of music that is of a lesser difficulty than that of the A Cappella Choir. It is required that participating students be able to carry a simple tune. Membership is by simple audition that requires no preparation during January and February of the previous year. Attendance at scheduled performances is required. Prerequisite: Incoming Freshmen must have the recommendation of their Junior High vocal music instructor. It is recommended that a student wishing to become a member of A Cappella Choir or Jazz Singers take this class in preparation for success in the auditioned groups. Note: The selection of choral music is based upon its historic and musical significance and at times will have religious text.

Southview Varsity Singers (87593) - SV ONLY

Prerequisite: Audition                                                                                                                                          


The Southview Varsity Singers (“SVS”) is a mixed voice audition-only ensemble of 16 singers. Students will perform a variety of pop a cappella music, vocal jazz, and contemporary chamber music. SVS will learn about sound technology and the set-up of speakers and microphones for a performance. Students will also learn proper microphone technique when singing solos and as a chamber ensemble members. This class will go over proper singing techniques for various subgenres of pop a cappella music. Along with performance techniques, SVS will also go over how to arrange ensemble charts by ear, using advanced musical aural skills built from their traditional choral ensemble. SVS will perform at all choir concerts, community events by invitation, and with other Sylvania Southview ensembles. Attendance at scheduled performances is required. Students are required to furnish their own formal uniforms in accordance with uniform guidelines
