Avoid microphones directly in front of the face.

When shooting a music showcase, avoid shots of the microphone obscuring a singer’s face, especially where their mouth is not visiable at all. 

Stand more to one side of the singer instead of directly in front of them. Move from one side to the other for a different perspective (if possible).

Avoid cropping the instrument your subject is playing.

Whether in camera or during post processing, be sure to keep the entire instrument of the subject of your photo in frame. 

Leave some space around your subject when shooting musicians - your can crop proportionally in post if you leave more than you planned. 

Exception: generally not possible to get an entire drum kit in frame
